DescriptionThe whole story▼
Wet clay is one of the hardest things a front brake can meet. It packs into the wheel, coats the disc and carries fine grit into the caliper, and on a long cross-country race it keeps coming for hours. Accossato lists the DK268 for the Yamaha YZ125X from 2021 to 2023: a one-piece steel front disc, 270 mm across and 3 mm thick, which bolts on in place of the original.
Key Features
- Fixed front disc for the Yamaha YZ125X, 2021 to 2023
- One-piece steel construction, from the off-road range
- 270 mm diameter, 118 mm centre
- 3 mm thick
- Six fixing holes of 6.5 mm on a 134 mm circle
- Interchangeable with the original disc, Accossato states
- Minimum thickness printed on the disc for easy checks
- No German ABE documented; for competition
Construction and Material Quality
Accossato makes the DK268 as a single steel disc, without carrier or rivets. It is 270 mm in diameter and 3 mm thick, with a 118 mm centre and six 6.5 mm holes on a 134 mm circle that match the original mounting. Like every disc from Accossato, it has its minimum working thickness printed on it. The Italian manufacturer says its brake discs are shaped by lessons learned in Superbike, Moto2 and Moto3.
Clay on the Pads
In mud, a brake works as a grinder. Clay and water form a paste with fine sand in it, and every application of the brake drags that paste between pad and disc. On a YZ125X the result after a muddy race can be dramatic: pads worn far more than in a dry month, and a disc with fresh grooves in its surface. The brake may also squeal, or bite unevenly, until the mud is gone.
During the race there is little to do beyond using the brakes briefly and firmly rather than dragging them, which keeps the pads cleaner. Afterwards the work begins. Wash the wheel and caliper with plenty of water before the mud dries, because dried clay sets hard around the pistons and in the caliper. Remove the pads and check how much is left, then look at the disc surface. Light, even grooves are normal wear. Deep, sharp grooves, or a thickness close to the printed minimum, mean the disc should be replaced. A disc scoured thin by a wet season is exactly the kind Accossato warns about: under extreme stress, a worn disc can break. Fit new pads with a new disc and bed them in over a few laps of gentle braking.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the DK268 for the YZ125X from 2021 to 2023. The larger DK269, a floating disc, is listed for the same years, and at the rear the DK168 also covers 2021 to 2023. The YZ125X uses one disc at the front. Tighten the bolts to Yamaha's figure and check the front wheel bearings, which take their share of the mud too.
Road Approval
We have no German ABE and no type approval on record for the DK268, which is sold for off-road competition.
