DescriptionThe whole story▼
A good share of the falls on a dual-sport happen at walking pace. The Suzuki DR-Z400S has a tall seat, and when the rider stops on broken ground and puts the left foot down into a hollow that looked shallower from above, the bike leans a little further than planned, then further still. Whether the rider fights it or not, it ends up on its left side, and the clutch lever takes the landing. The C7140 from Accossato replaces that lever on the DR-Z400S of 2000 to 2019 and 2021 with one milled in Italy from Ergal 7075, whose blade can fold forward on a joint.
Key Features
- Folding clutch lever for the Suzuki DR-Z400S, 2000 to 2019 and 2021
- Replaces the standard lever at the original clutch perch
- Longer blade shaped for four fingers
- Anti-break joint lets the blade tip forward when the bike lands on it
- Cut from solid Ergal 7075 on CNC machines in Italy
- Black or gold blade on a dark base
- Sold individually
- No German ABE on record; for off-road use
Construction and Material Quality
From the outside the C7140 looks like two parts, and that is what it is. The base, finished dark, sits where the original lever was on the clutch perch; the blade, black or gold, is carried on a joint at its end and can fold away from it. Both are machined from solid Ergal 7075, an alloy Accossato uses because it wants its levers strong and dependable without extra weight; the milling is done in Italy. On the clutch side the blade is long enough for four fingers to rest on it together.
Foot Down, Ground Missing
Dual-sport riders learn a particular routine on rough trails. Approaching a stop, you look for somewhere to put a foot, and on a DR-Z400S that search matters more than on a lower bike, because there is further to reach. Ruts, holes behind rocks and the soft edge of a track all catch people out. The foot goes down, finds nothing firm, and the weight of the bike, already leaning, carries it over. At that speed it is hardly a crash, more an undignified lie-down, but the left bar end and the clutch lever arrive on the ground first and take most of the load.
A solid lever tends to break at the tip in exactly these topples, because the weight of the bike pins it against a rock or hard soil with nothing to give. The joint on the C7140 is there to provide some give: the blade can fold forward and escape the full force. Afterwards you lift the DR-Z400S, check that the blade sits in its usual position and pulls cleanly, and ride on. It will not work every time, and a rock in the wrong place can still damage the lever. Yet the more often it survives these small, frequent falls, the less often a ride ends early because the clutch can no longer be used.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato's list for the C7140 shows the Suzuki DR-Z400S from 2000 to 2019 and again for 2021, with no entry for 2020. The lever takes the place of the original one at the clutch perch. For the right side there is the B8142 folding brake lever, covering the same model years and made in the same two colours, black and gold.
Road Approval
The C7140 has no documented German ABE. A DR-Z400S carrying number plates is therefore not approved for public roads with this lever fitted; ride it off-road and at closed events.
