DescriptionThe whole story▼
Most enduro riders fit handguards, and on a Husqvarna FE 450 wrap-around guards are a common sight. They keep branches off the fingers and take many knocks that would otherwise land on the levers. Yet they do not cover everything: a fall on to a sharp rock or a stump can still reach the lever, or bend the guard into it. For the 2017 FE 450 Accossato lists the C7284, a folding clutch lever milled from Ergal 7075 in Italy, with a long four-finger blade and a joint that lets it fold.
Key Features
- Folding clutch lever for the Husqvarna FE 450, 2017 model year
- Fits the original clutch mount in place of the stock lever
- Long blade with room for four fingers
- Anti-break joint lets the blade swing forward on impact
- Machined from solid Ergal 7075 in Italy
- Black, blue or orange blade
- No German ABE documented; off-road and competition use
Construction and Material Quality
Where the lever meets the bike, the C7284 has a dark base that mounts on the pivot of the original clutch control. The blade, in black, blue or orange, meets that base at a joint and can fold forward from it. Accossato machines both from solid Ergal 7075, a high-strength aluminium alloy, on CNC machines in Italy, and says it is aiming for strength, low weight and reliability. The blade is long, as on all of its clutch levers, so that four fingers can rest on it.
When the Guards Are Not Enough
Handguards come in two main kinds. Open shields deflect branches and wind but do little in a fall, while wrap-around guards, fixed to the handlebar at both ends, form a cage around the hand and the lever. The latter prevent a great deal of damage, which is why so many enduro riders fit them. But the geometry of a crash is unpredictable. A bike that falls against a pointed rock can push the rock straight between guard and lever, and a guard that is struck hard can bend inwards and press on the lever itself.
That is why some riders want two lines of defence. The guard takes the broad blows; the lever, if it can fold, deals with what gets through. On the C7284 the joint lets the blade swing forward under an impact that reaches its end, so a strike that gets past the guard has a chance of leaving the lever usable. It is not a guarantee, and nothing makes a heavy crash harmless, but on an FE 450 ridden through rocky woods it gives the clutch side one more reason to come through a bad day intact.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato's listing for the C7284 covers the Husqvarna FE 450 of the 2017 model year only; it fits the original clutch mount instead of the stock lever. For the 2014 to 2016 FE 450 the C7283 is listed. The B8283 folding brake lever covers all four years from 2014 to 2017 and shares this lever's choice of black, blue or orange.
Road Approval
The C7284 has no German ABE on record. The FE 450 may be registered for the road, yet this lever is not approved for public roads and is intended for off-road riding and competition.
Scope of Delivery
