DescriptionThe whole story▼
In a tight woods race the trees are part of the course. Lines run so close to the trunks that handguards brush the bark, and every so often a bar end catches properly. The KTM 250 XC-F, KTM's 250 four-stroke for cross-country racing, is nimble enough to thread those gaps, yet its brake lever is the first thing to meet a tree when a gap turns out narrower than it looked. Accossato's B8283 for the 250 XC-F of 2014 to 2022 is milled from Ergal 7075, and a joint lets its blade fold forward instead of breaking off.
Key Features
- Folding brake lever for the KTM 250 XC-F, 2014 to 2022 model years
- Replaces the stock lever on the front brake master cylinder
- Joint allows the blade to swing forward on impact
- Shorter blade for three fingers
- CNC-machined in Italy from Ergal 7075
- Blade in black, blue or orange, base in a dark finish
- Sold as a single lever
- No German ABE documented: off-road and competition use
Construction and Material Quality
Ergal 7075 is one of the stronger aluminium alloys in common use, and Accossato machines the B8283 from a solid piece of it on CNC equipment in Italy. The company describes what it wants from the result in plain terms: a lever that is strong, light and reliable. It comes in two parts. A dark base sits at the pivot on the master cylinder, and a blade in black, blue or orange is hinged to it. Accossato keeps its brake blades short, sized for three fingers, which leaves the rest of the hand wrapped round the grip where it can hold on over the roots.
Trees at Bar Height
Riders who race in tight timber learn to judge gaps by the width of their handlebar. With practice, the 250 XC-F can be steered through spaces that look impossible from a standstill, and a slight lean of the bike buys a little extra room at the bar ends. The trouble comes when a gap is misjudged at speed. The bar end and the lever beside it strike the trunk first, and the bike is either stopped dead or spun round. Either way, the right-hand lever has just taken a direct blow.
A solid lever tends to snap at its end or bend back towards the grip, and a brake lever bent that far is hard to use with confidence. The B8283 is built so that its blade can pivot forward and away from the impact, which gives it a decent chance of coming out straight and usable. That does not make trees harmless, and a hard enough hit can ruin any lever, but halfway round a long woods loop, riding on with a proper front brake is worth a great deal. The rest is line choice: look at the gap rather than the tree, and the KTM 250 XC-F will usually follow your eyes.
Fitment and Compatibility
On Accossato's application list the B8283 appears for the KTM 250 XC-F from 2014 to 2022, taking over from the original brake lever. Earlier 250 XC-F models are covered on the left only: the C7283 folding clutch lever is listed from 2007 to 2022. Both levers come in black, blue and orange, and the clutch lever can additionally be ordered in red.
Road Approval
The B8283 carries no documented German ABE. It is meant for racing and off-road riding, the kind of use a 250 XC-F is made for, not for public roads.
