DescriptionThe whole story▼
Close the throttle on a 250 two-stroke and the bike keeps rolling freely, so on the KTM 250 XC most of the slowing down is left to the brakes. Over a cross-country race the front lever is squeezed hard on every lap, and now and then one of those squeezes ends with the front wheel tucking in a greasy turn. Accossato's B8283 replaces the stock brake lever of the 250 XC built from 2014 to 2022. It is CNC-machined in Italy from solid Ergal 7075, and its blade is hinged so that it can fold forward when the bike lands on its right.
Key Features
- Folding front brake lever for the KTM 250 XC, model years 2014 to 2022
- Takes the place of the standard lever at the front brake master cylinder
- Hinged blade that can fold forward when the bike goes down on its right
- Compact blade for three fingers, the way Accossato shapes its brake levers
- CNC-machined in Italy from a solid piece of Ergal 7075 aluminium alloy
- Dark base, blade in black, blue or orange
- Supplied as a single lever
- No German ABE documented; intended for off-road and competition use
Construction and Material Quality
Accossato does not cast the B8283. The lever is milled on CNC machines in Italy from solid Ergal 7075, a grade of aluminium alloy valued for its high strength, and the company names three goals for it: strength, low weight and reliability. What comes off the machine is a lever in two parts. A dark-finished base sits on the pivot of the master cylinder and houses the joint, while the blade ahead of it carries the colour you choose. On the brake side Accossato keeps the blade short, with room for three fingers.
Where the Two-Stroke Freewheels
Riders who come to the 250 XC from a four-stroke notice it within a lap. Roll off the throttle on a four-stroke and the engine holds the bike back; roll off on the two-stroke and it simply carries on, because there is far less engine braking to help. The brakes have to make up the difference. Braking points move earlier, the front lever is used harder and more often, and good riders learn to trail the brake gently into the turn instead of relying on a downshift to scrub off speed.
All that extra front-brake work has a price when the ground turns slick. A cross-country loop changes with every lap, and a turn that gripped on the first lap may be polished mud an hour later. Brake a touch too hard with the bars turned and the front tucks, dropping the KTM 250 XC onto its right side at little more than walking pace. It is the sort of fall that seldom hurts the rider yet often costs a lever. The joint on the B8283 gives the blade a way to swing ahead out of the impact instead of snapping off at the tip, so there is a fair chance you can stand the bike up and brake normally for the rest of the race. A hard enough knock can still damage it; the point is that the odds improve.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato's application list names the B8283 for the KTM 250 XC of the 2014 to 2022 model years, where it replaces the original lever on the front brake master cylinder. Bikes built before 2014 are not covered on the brake side. The C7283 clutch lever from the same range spans a longer stretch of the 250 XC, 2006 to 2022, and is also offered in red; black, blue and orange are available on both, so a matching pair is simple to put together.
Road Approval
The B8283 has no documented German ABE. It is made for off-road riding and racing, which is the use the 250 XC was built for, and not for public roads.
