DescriptionThe whole story▼
Quarries are popular enduro venues wherever the owners allow riding, and they teach a particular kind of braking. The ground is broken stone, shale and slate that shifts under the tyres like marbles, and on the steep ramps between levels the front wheel is always close to sliding. The KTM 200 EXC, a two-stroke enduro that sits between the 125 and the 250, is well suited to such terrain in capable hands. For the 200 EXC of 2014 to 2016, Accossato makes the B8283, a brake lever milled from Ergal 7075 whose blade can fold forward.
Key Features
- Folding front brake lever for the KTM 200 EXC, 2014 to 2016
- Mounts on the original front brake master cylinder in place of the stock lever
- Short, three-finger blade
- Anti-break joint: the blade may fold forward rather than snap
- Machined in Italy from solid Ergal 7075 aluminium alloy
- Blade black, blue or orange; base dark
- No German ABE documented; for off-road use and competition
Construction and Material Quality
The B8283 is made from two pieces of Ergal 7075, each machined from solid on CNC equipment in Italy. Accossato relies on this aluminium alloy, one of the strongest in common use, because its levers are meant to be tough, light and reliable. The first piece is the dark base, which fits over the pivot of the front brake master cylinder and carries the joint. The second is the blade in black, blue or orange, short and shaped for three fingers, which can fold forward on that joint.
Loose Slate in the Quarry
Braking on loose stone is a matter of letting the front wheel keep rolling. A wheel that locks on shale does not slow the bike; it slides on a bed of moving fragments and takes the bike with it. So riders use the front brake in short, light squeezes, rely more on the rear, and settle their speed long before the edge of a ramp. Many quarries also hide sharp-edged rock under the loose layer, which is unforgiving to anything that falls onto it.
When the front does go, the bike usually falls quickly, and on the right side the brake lever meets a surface of broken stone. A solid lever tends to snap at the tip in such a fall, sometimes at the first crash of the day. The B8283 lets its blade fold forward instead of absorbing the impact at a single fixed point. It may still be scratched or damaged in a hard fall, but there is a fair chance it will work well enough to take the 200 EXC safely down the next ramp.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato's application list gives 2014 to 2016 for the B8283 on the KTM 200 EXC, where it replaces the lever at the original front brake master cylinder. The folding clutch lever for this bike, the C7284, covers a wider span, 2009 to 2016, and is offered in the same three colours. Owners of a 200 EXC built from 2009 to 2013 will find only the clutch lever for their bike in this range.
Road Approval
The B8283 has no documented German ABE. A 200 EXC is normally registered for road use, but with this lever fitted it is not approved on public roads; the lever is for off-road terrain and competition.
