DescriptionThe whole story▼
Pulling away on a VMAX takes a certain restraint. The V4 pulls hard from low revs, and all of that pull goes to the rear wheel through a shaft, so how smoothly the bike moves off depends largely on how gently the left hand lets the clutch out. That is where Accossato's ESC777 comes in. Machined from aluminium for the Yamaha VMAX of 2009 to 2020, it fits the original clutch mounting, and because its span is adjustable, the take-up can sit right under the fingers that do the fine work.
Key Features
- Clutch lever for the VMAX, listed for 2009 to 2020
- Replaces the stock lever at the original clutch mounting
- Adjustable span between blade and grip
- Machined from aluminium and anodised
- Black hub, blade in one of seven colours
- Short, standard (about 138 mm) or long, depending on the colour
- One-piece blade, no folding hinge
Construction and Material Quality
Accossato cuts the ESC777 from aluminium on CNC machines and then anodises it. Anodising is not a coat of paint laid on top: the coloured layer grows out of the surface of the metal itself, so it wears slowly and does not flake. The hub, holding the pivot and the adjuster, comes out black whatever colour the blade is. The blade itself is fixed, with no folding joint between hub and tip, so the lever hardly flexes and has no hinge to rattle, and the point where the clutch begins to bite stays where you left it.
Shaft Drive and a Gentle Left Hand
Shaft-driven bikes are sensitive to sudden changes in drive. Let the clutch out abruptly and the driveline takes up with a jolt you feel through the seat, and with this much pull available low down, the rear tyre can also step out of line on a dusty or damp surface. The remedy is a slow, even release through the friction zone, and that is easiest when the zone falls in the part of the lever travel your fingers control most finely. Use the adjuster to bring the blade in until the clutch begins to engage with your fingers slightly curled rather than stretched flat. The long blade, made in blue, green, orange and gold, adds leverage and so lightens the pull, a real help in slow traffic on a heavy machine. The standard length of about 138 mm stays closest to the original and is the only choice in red or black.
Fitment and Compatibility
For the VMAX, the ESC777 is catalogued under the version name VMX 1700 with the years 2009 to 2020, which covers the V4 generation that followed the original V-Max. It is fitted at the VMAX's original clutch mounting in place of the stock lever. If you also want to change the front brake lever, Accossato makes the EDR104 for the same bike and the same years; ordering both in one colour gives the cockpit a matched pair, while mixing lengths is just as possible.
Road Approval
No German ABE has been documented for the ESC777, so this lever is sold for use on the track.
