DescriptionThe whole story▼
A cruiser is ridden with the back upright and the arms reaching forward to a wide bar, and that relaxed posture is a large part of why people choose a California 1400 Custom. It also means the hands do their work at the end of outstretched arms. The Accossato ESC023 is a clutch lever for the California Custom ABS 1400 of 2014 to 2020. It fits the clutch mounting the bike left the factory with, it is machined from aluminium, and an adjuster near the pivot sets its distance from the grip, so the lever can meet your fingers without the arm having to stretch further.
Key Features
- Clutch lever for the Moto Guzzi California Custom ABS 1400, listed 2014 to 2020
- Fits the original clutch mounting
- Reach adjustable at the hub
- Available in black, blue, red, orange, gold, silver and green
- Standard length about 138 mm; short and long blades in selected colours
- CNC-machined from solid aluminium, anodised
- Black hub, fixed blade without hinge
- No German ABE documented, sold for track use
Construction and Material Quality
CNC machines shape the ESC023 from a single piece of aluminium. After that, anodising colours the surface: the hub, with its pivot and reach adjuster, always in black, the blade in one of seven colours. Anodised aluminium keeps its finish through years of weather and cleaning better than a painted surface, because the colour sits in the oxide layer rather than on it. Blade and hub make up one rigid part, without a folding joint.
Reach From a Relaxed Cruiser Seat
With the arms extended, the fingers have less strength and less precision than with the elbows bent. On the California Custom, that shows most at the clutch, which is used constantly in town and at every junction. If the lever sits far from the grip, each pull starts with the hand opened wide at the end of a straight arm, and after an hour the forearm starts to complain. Moving the ESC023 closer to the grip lets you work the clutch with the fingers partly closed, which is where they are strongest. Sit on the bike as you would on the road, leaning neither forward nor back, and adjust the reach until the lever arrives under your fingertips without you leaning towards it. Riders with smaller hands may bring it in further still. For a lighter pull, the long blade, offered in blue, gold, green and orange, places the fingers further from the pivot and increases their leverage.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato's catalogue shows the ESC023 for the California 1400 Custom from 2014 to 2020, and the lever replaces the original at the Custom's clutch mounting. The EDF023 brake lever carries the same model years if you want the controls to match. Only the standard length of about 138 mm is made in black and red; silver offers a short blade as well.
Road Approval
A German ABE is not documented for the ESC023. It is therefore sold for track riding.
