DescriptionThe whole story▼
A CB500X used for commuting starts many of its days in the cold, and on many bikes the first gear of a cold morning goes in with a clunk. Part of the reason lies in the oil, part in the clutch lever and how far your hand can pull it. Accossato's ESH250 is a clutch lever for the CB500X of 2013 to 2021, machined from aluminium and anodised, with an adjustable distance to the grip.
Key Features
- Clutch lever for the Honda CB500X, 2013 to 2021
- Fitted at the original clutch mounting
- Adjustable reach, so the lever can be pulled all the way in
- Standard blade roughly 138 mm, plus short and long versions
- Seven anodised colours with a black hub
- Machined aluminium, rigid one-piece blade
- Sold for track use, as no German ABE is documented
Construction and Material Quality
The ESH250 is CNC-machined from aluminium and anodised, with a black hub and a coloured blade. The hub is where it pivots and where its reach is set; the blade is rigidly fixed, with no folding joint. A lever built this way passes the whole of its travel on to the clutch, which matters here: it is the full movement of the lever that separates the clutch plates completely, and any give in the lever would take some of that movement away.
Cold Mornings and a Quiet First Gear
In a wet clutch, the plates run in engine oil, and cold oil is thick. On a chilly morning it can make the plates drag even with the lever pulled, so the gearbox keeps turning a little and first gear engages with a clunk, sometimes with a small lurch forward. Letting the engine run for a moment helps, and so does pulling the lever all the way in. That sounds obvious, yet a lever set far out, combined with thick winter gloves, often stops just short of full travel. Check this in the gloves you commute in: with the engine off, pull the ESH250 and see whether it reaches the end of its travel before your fingers run out of theirs. If it does not, bring it closer with the adjuster until it does. The same setting makes finding neutral easier while the engine is still cold, and the long blade reduces the effort of holding the clutch in. On a CB500X that is ridden through the winter, it is a small adjustment with a noticeable effect every morning.
Fitment and Compatibility
The ESH250 is listed by Accossato for the CB500X from 2013 to 2021 and replaces the lever at the original clutch mounting. On the brake side, the matching lever for these years is the EDF025. The later CB500X of 2022 and 2023 appears in Accossato's list with the EDF018 brake lever.
Road Approval
The ESH250 is sold for circuit use only; no German ABE has been documented.
