DescriptionThe whole story▼
Riding a big GS slowly on loose ground is mostly a job for the left hand. In a rutted track, on a steep gravel climb or across wet grass, the rear tyre needs just enough drive to keep turning without spinning, and that amount is metered at the clutch. The Accossato ESB002 is a clutch lever for the BMW R 1200 GS from 2004 to 2016, machined from aluminium on CNC equipment and anodised, with a reach that adjusts to your hand.
Key Features
- Clutch lever for the BMW R 1200 GS, 2004 to 2016
- Mounts at the original clutch mounting
- Adjustable reach, set at the hub
- Three blade lengths, the standard version about 138 mm
- Black hub, blade in one of seven anodised colours
- Machined from solid aluminium
- Fixed lever with no folding joint
- Track use; no German ABE documented
Construction and Material Quality
Accossato cuts the ESB002 from a solid aluminium blank and anodises it once the machining is complete. The finished part has a black hub, holding the pivot and the reach adjuster, and a coloured blade that runs in one piece to the tip. Machining keeps the blade slim and regular along its whole length, with edges that stay crisp. Since there is no hinge, the clutch take-up is never blurred by play in a joint, which matters when you are working the friction point at walking pace with a heavy bike beneath you.
Feathering the Clutch on Loose Ground
Off tarmac, the friction point stops being a single spot and becomes a working zone. You hold the clutch partly engaged, let a little more drive through when the rear tyre finds grip and take it back the moment the tyre starts to dig. On the R 1200 GS this is done with one or two fingers, so the rest of the hand can hold the bar while stones knock the front wheel sideways. A blade adjusted closer to the grip makes the two-finger work more precise, because the fingers are already curled when the friction point arrives.
The short blade, available in blue, gold, green, orange and silver, is made for exactly this technique. On long, slow climbs, where the hand grows tired, some riders prefer the long blade instead; its extra length gives more leverage and a lighter pull. Whichever you choose, practise on an easy track before the difficult one, because a heavy R 1200 GS on loose ground does not forgive a clumsy release.
Fitment and Compatibility
The ESB002 appears on Accossato's list for the R 1200 GS from 2004 through 2016. Its version list follows the development of the bike, with entries for the early air/oil-cooled GS of 2004 to 2007, the bikes of 2008 and 2009, the 2010 to 2012 models and the liquid-cooled GS of 2013 to 2016. For those last years, the ESC075 is listed as a second clutch option. On the brake side, the EDB001 covers the same 2004 to 2016 period and the EDB077 the liquid-cooled bikes from 2013 to 2019.
Road Approval
The ESB002 has no documented German ABE. It is sold for racetrack and closed-course use.
