DescriptionThe whole story▼
The R1 of 2009 brought the crossplane crankshaft to Yamaha's road superbike, and with it the uneven, rumbling sound that made the model instantly recognisable. Many of those bikes are now well into their second decade, and a winter on the workbench, with fresh fluid, new pads and a careful look at every control, is part of keeping them sharp. The Accossato EDR019 is a CNC-machined aluminium brake lever for the R1, listed from 2009 to 2021, that fits naturally into such a service.
Key Features
- Brake lever for the R1, listed from 2009 to 2021
- Fits the original front master cylinder
- Distance to the grip adjustable
- Three lengths, the standard one approximately 138 mm
- Black hub, seven blade colours
- Machined from aluminium and anodised
- Fixed blade, no hinge
- Individual Accossato box
Construction and Material Quality
The EDR019 is a machined part. Aluminium is shaped by CNC tools and then anodised, with the hub in black and the blade in the colour you choose. Because the colour is formed within the surface of the metal, there is no paint that could soften or blister, although, as with any part near a master cylinder, spilled brake fluid should be wiped off straight away. The lever is one rigid piece without a folding joint, and it mounts on the original master cylinder in place of the stock lever.
An Older R1 on the Workbench
A lever change fits neatly into a brake service. With the old fluid out and the pads removed, it is a good moment to look at the parts that are easy to overlook: the lever pivot and the brake light switch beside it. On an older R1 the original lever may have picked up scratches or a slight bend from a tip-over in the garage, and wear at the pivot can make the first contact feel vague. Fitting the EDR019 gives you a new pivot bore and a blade in the length you want. Once the system has been refilled and bled as usual, check three things before the first ride: that there is a little free travel before the pads bite, that the brake light comes on as soon as the lever moves, and that the lever returns fully when released. Set the reach last, with your riding gloves on. The standard blade feels closest to the original R1 lever; the short one suits riders who brake with two fingers, and the long one those who prefer the whole hand.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato's list shows the EDR019 for the R1 of 2009 to 2014, the first crossplane generation, and continues it under a reference called R1 SP for 2015 to 2021. For those later years the EDR015 is also listed for the R1, so if your bike is a 2015 or newer model, compare both products with the lever you have before ordering. On the clutch side, Accossato lists the ESY688 for 2009 to 2014 bikes and the ESV04A for 2015 to 2021.
Road Approval
We have no German ABE on file for the EDR019, which is why it goes out as a part for track use.
