DescriptionThe whole story▼
Shorter riders who want a Tiger 800 with an off-road bias often end up on the XCx Low, which brings the off-road-leaning XCx closer to the ground. A lower seat does not flatten the hills, though. Sooner or later every trail rider has to stop halfway down a steep, loose slope, to let someone pass or to pick a line, and then the front brake holds the whole bike. Accossato's EDF014 for the Tiger 800 XCx Low, listed for 2015 to 2020, is a machined aluminium brake lever whose reach brings the blade to a smaller hand.
Key Features
- Replaces the front brake lever of the Tiger 800 XCx Low
- Accossato's listing: Tiger 800 from 2015 to 2020, Tiger 800 Low from 2016 to 2019
- Mounts on the original master cylinder
- Reach to the grip adjustable near the pivot
- Standard blade approximately 138 mm; short in five colours, long in four
- Machined aluminium, anodised, black hub
- Fixed blade, no folding mechanism
- No German ABE documented, sold for track use
Construction and Material Quality
Holding a bike on a slope can mean a steady squeeze for a minute or more, and the shape under your fingers matters for that. The EDF014 is machined from aluminium on CNC equipment, which gives the blade clean, even edges, and then anodised. Its hub is black and carries the pivot and the reach adjuster, while the blade takes one of seven colours. Nothing in the lever can fold or shift; it is a single rigid piece, so a firm hold stays firm for as long as you need it.
Facing Downhill on Loose Ground
Stopping on a steep descent is the easy part: brake front and rear, come to a halt, put a foot down. Holding still and moving off again are where the skill lies. With the bike pointing downhill, more of its weight rests on the front wheel, so the front brake does most of the holding while the clutch is pulled and the engine keeps running. A lower seat lets you plant a boot firmly. To move off, a common technique is to select first or second with the clutch still in, ease the front brake off gradually so the bike starts to roll, then let the clutch out so the engine takes over the braking. Releasing the lever smoothly is the difficult bit, and it is far easier with the blade within comfortable reach. On the Tiger 800 XCx Low, set the reach so a smaller hand holds the blade with the middle of the fingers rather than the tips, and practise the restart on a gentle slope first.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the EDF014 twice within this family: for the Tiger 800 from 2015 to 2020 and for the Tiger 800 Low from 2016 to 2019. Neither entry names the XCx Low as such, because Accossato stops at the series, and the lever sits on the original master cylinder of that series. We have therefore given the XCx Low a product of its own and kept the wider span of the main entry. A clutch lever is not named for it; the EST333P that Accossato offers for the Tiger 800 is listed for the XC, XCx, XR and XRx of 2015 to 2018, not for the Low versions.
Road Approval
A German ABE is not on record for this lever, so it is supplied for the track.
