DescriptionThe whole story▼
New tyres are one of the pleasures of motorcycling, but for the first stretch they need care. Fresh from the factory their surface is smooth and can still carry traces of release agent, and until it has been scrubbed in, grip is lower than it will be later. On a Z650, a light middleweight twin that many newer riders choose, the first kilometres on new tyres call for a gentle right hand. The Accossato EDF021 is a brake lever for the Kawasaki Z650, listed for 2017 to 2024. CNC-machined from aluminium and anodised, it fits the original master cylinder and has an adjustable reach.
Key Features
- Brake lever for the Kawasaki Z650, 2017 to 2024
- Covers the first bikes and the version updated for 2020
- Mounts on the original master cylinder
- Adjustable reach to the grip
- Standard blade approximately 138 mm; short and long in selected colours
- Aluminium, CNC-machined and anodised in seven blade colours
- Rigid blade, black hub
Construction and Material Quality
Gentle braking relies on a lever that passes on small changes of pressure faithfully. The EDF021 is built as a fixed lever, so nothing along its length gives way or rattles, and its pivot bore is machined precisely enough for the blade to move without slack. After CNC machining it is anodised in two tones: the hub with the reach adjuster in black on all versions, the blade in the colour of your order, with the colour sitting within the hard oxide surface rather than on top of it.
Fresh Tyres, Careful Hands
For the first ride after a tyre change, treat the Z650 as if the road were damp. Brake earlier and more softly than usual, build pressure gradually, and avoid hard braking while leaned until the tyres have been used across their width. Increasing the lean angle step by step over a series of gentle bends scrubs the surface in, and whoever fitted the tyres can tell you roughly how far to ride before trusting them fully. Controlled braking of this kind is easier when the lever sits where the fingers can dose it finely, so set the EDF021 until the blade meets them at the first joint with the hand relaxed. Many riders keep two fingers resting on the lever during those first rides, ready but light. The short blade, made in every colour except black and red, suits that style; the standard lever of approximately 138 mm is available in all seven.
Fitment and Compatibility
Two entries in Accossato's list cover the Z650: 2017 to 2019 and 2020 to 2024, the second belonging to the updated Z650 that Kawasaki introduced for 2020. Both use the EDF021, which replaces the lever on the original front master cylinder. For the clutch, Accossato lists the ESK750 for Z650s from 2017 to 2020; for later bikes, the list names no clutch lever.
Road Approval
No German ABE is on file for the EDF021, and the lever is sold for circuit use accordingly.
