DescriptionThe whole story▼
The Stripe takes its name from the stripes of its livery, but under the paint it is still a Monster 821: a naked roadster, and naked roadsters ride in whatever weather the day brings. There is no fairing to keep rain off your hands, and the gloves you pull on for a wet ride are thicker than the ones you wear in July. The Accossato EDB012 is a replacement front brake lever for the Monster 821 Stripe from 2014 to 2019. Its reach can follow the glove, and its blade is machined aluminium with an anodised finish.
Key Features
- Distance to the grip adjustable, handy when you change gloves
- Seven blade colours on a black hub
- Blade lengths short, standard and long; standard is approximately 138 mm
- Mounts on the original front brake master cylinder of the Monster 821 Stripe
- CNC-machined from aluminium and anodised
- Fixed design, the blade has no folding joint
- Comes in a dedicated Accossato box
Construction and Material Quality
This lever is a machined part, not a casting. Accossato shapes it from aluminium on CNC equipment and then gives it an anodised finish, black on the hub and coloured on the blade. Because the colour is part of the oxidised surface rather than a layer of paint, it copes with rain, road spray and cleaning products without lifting at the edges. The blade is rigid and joins the hub directly; there is no second pivot in between, so the lever you pull on a wet Monday is the same lever you set up in the garage.
Wet Roads and Armoured Gloves
Riding in the rain changes how you use the front brake. You start braking earlier, you squeeze more gently at first, and you want that first contact to be delicate. A thick waterproof glove works against all of that. The extra padding, and especially hard knuckle armour, moves your fingers away from the grip, and a lever set up for thin summer gloves can end up resting on them before you have decided to brake.
The adjuster is the answer. On a dry evening, put on the gloves you actually wear in the rain, sit on the Monster 821 Stripe, and move the blade outwards until your fingers can rest just in front of it with the hand relaxed. Then check that the first joint of your fingers lands on the blade when you reach for it. When the summer gloves come back out, bring it in again. The length matters here too: a long blade gives gloved fingers a little more surface to find, and blue, green, orange and gold are made in that size.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the EDB012 for the Monster 821 Stripe from 2014 to 2019, in two versions covering 2014 to 2017 and 2018 to 2019. Both use this brake lever on the original master cylinder. The clutch lever Accossato makes for the same bike and years is the ESD082.
Road Approval
The EDB012 has no documented German ABE, which is why it is sold for track use.
