DescriptionThe whole story▼
Look closely at a grid of small-capacity race bikes and you will see many riders change up by pressing the gear lever down. They have turned the gearbox pattern upside down, and they have their reasons. Accossato's FT114 rearsets for the Kawasaki Ninja 400 of 2018 to 2020 can be set up for this reversed pattern or for the standard one, and they place the rider's feet further back than the original footrests.

Construction and Material Quality
The FT114 is an aluminium set with the plain, functional design Accossato uses for its rearsets. Pegs and lever tips alike are knurled, so a boot finds grip whether it is resting, pushing down or hooking under a lever, and aluminium plates guard the heels. Accossato describes the kit as adjustable without detailing how the adjustment is made or how many positions there are. You choose between an all-black version and one in black with green details.
Turning the Gear Pattern Upside Down
With the standard road pattern, first gear sits below neutral and every higher gear is selected by lifting the lever with your toe. The reversed pattern, often called race shift or GP shift, mirrors this: first is up, and each higher gear comes with a push down on the lever.
The reason lies in left-hand bends. With the bike leaned far over to the left, the gear lever is close to the track surface, and getting a toe underneath it to change up on the exit is awkward, sometimes impossible without moving the foot on the peg. Pressing down needs no such contortion: the ball of the foot simply rolls onto the lever. Downshifts happen mostly with the bike upright under braking, where lifting the lever causes no trouble.
The price is habit. After years on the standard pattern, your foot will try the old movement, usually at the worst moment. Rehearse the new one with the bike on a stand, then use a relaxed session on track to get used to it, and do not swap patterns from one weekend to the next. If friends ride your Ninja 400, tell them clearly which pattern is set. On the road, a reversed pattern is unusual and is better avoided.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the FT114 for the Ninja 400 from 2018 to 2020, where it replaces the rider's original footrests and controls. Whichever pattern you choose, have the workshop set it up, adjust the brake linkage, check free play and brake light and run through every gear with the bike on a stand before the first ride. Bolts go in at Kawasaki's specified torque, with thread lock as the manual requires.
Road Approval
There is no documented ABE or parts certificate for the FT114. In Germany that rules out road use, so we sell it for the track.
