DescriptionThe whole story▼
For owners of a 2017 or 2018 BMW S 1000 R, the question with the FT052 is less whether to fit rearsets than how to set them up. Accossato's adjustable racing street rearset, made of aluminium, moves the feet further back than the stock footrests and can be arranged for the standard shift pattern or for a reversed one, the layout most racers use. On a naked road bike that choice deserves more thought than on a pure track machine, and it should be made before the workshop starts.
Key Features
- Adjustable racing street rearsets for the BMW S 1000 R, 2017–2018
- Standard or reversed shift pattern
- Aluminium, simple and functional
- Knurled footpegs and lever tips for grip
- Aluminium heel guards
- Riding position further back than with the original footrests
- All black, or black with blue details
- No German ABE documented; for track use
Construction and Material Quality
Accossato builds the FT052 in aluminium and keeps it functional rather than decorative. The footpegs and the ends of both levers are knurled so that boot soles do not skate across them, and aluminium plates guard the heels. Accossato calls the rearset adjustable but does not publish the details of the adjustment, so the workshop will work out the options on your bike and set them with you sitting on it. You can order it all black, or black with blue details if you want a colour accent that relates to the paint of your S 1000 R.
Standard or Reversed on a Road Bike
With the standard pattern you press the gear lever down for first gear and lift it for every higher gear. The reversed pattern turns this round: a push down for each upshift, a lift for each downshift. On a circuit that has a clear advantage, since an upshift becomes a downward push that stays easy even with the bike far over to the left. On the road almost every bike you might borrow, rent or test ride uses the standard pattern, and your left foot acts on habit. Riders who alternate between patterns tend to make mistakes at awkward moments, such as selecting a lower gear when they wanted a higher one while accelerating out of a bend. If your S 1000 R spends most of its life on public roads and visits a circuit a few times a year, the standard setup is the calmer choice. If it has become a track bike, reversing the pattern and staying with it is logical. Whichever you pick, take the first laps at an easy pace until the movement is automatic.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the FT052 for the S 1000 R of 2017 and 2018. The earlier naked bike of 2014 to 2016 takes the FT003 instead, which works only with the standard pattern. Whichever layout you choose for your S 1000 R, the gear linkage has to be connected and adjusted with care, the brake pedal needs a little free play and the brake light must be checked. A specialist workshop is the right place for that, tightening every fastener to BMW's specified values.
Road Approval
There is no German ABE or Teilegutachten on record for the FT052, so we sell it for the track. A reversed shift pattern would be unusual on public roads in any case.
