DescriptionThe whole story▼

Speed-Tech Mat is the one decor on this shell that wears a graphic rather than the bare weave: a matte black base cut through with a red-and-blue streak that runs back from the visor edge toward the spoiler, and the SHARK wordmark spelled out along the flank rather than tucked into a badge. Where Carbon Skin and Full Carbon sell the fibre itself as the finish, this one sells motion — a livery built to read at speed, not a static swatch. Up close the matte topcoat kills any gloss reflection along the graphic, so the red and blue read flat and solid rather than glassy under direct light.

The lightest shell in this pairing

This decor shares its shell construction with the rest of the Carbon side of the RS Jet range — a carbon-fibre composite over multi-density EPS, swapped in for the standard RS Jet's own material for less weight and more rigidity. Shark's own weight figure for this specific decor comes in at 1,280 g for the first shell size, lighter again than either Carbon Skin or Full Carbon at 1,430 g each; whether that gap comes from a different layup under the graphic paint or simple production variance between batches is not something Shark's published material explains, so it is reported here as its own figure rather than smoothed into an average with the other two.

Open at the chin, by design

This remains a jet helmet under the graphics, and a jet helmet has no chin bar. The lower face sits open below the visor line, with nothing standing in for the structural guard a full-face shell would provide across the jaw. That is the trade every rider makes choosing this shape over a closed one — an open field of view and quick on/off in exchange for coverage across the chin — and it is worth saying directly rather than leaving it to be discovered later.

What ECE 22.06 actually tests

ECE 22.06 is the certification on this shell, the standard that took over from 22.05 as the EU's mandatory approval for newly homologated helmets from January 2024. The test itself changed substantially: eighteen impact points rather than five, across multiple speeds instead of one, plus an oblique-impact test against an abrasive surface that the old standard never included at all — scored for the rotational forces a glancing hit sends into the brain, not only the straight-line force of a drop. The graphic layer does not change what is under it: Norme 2206 on the price sheet, no FIM suffix, a road standard rather than a competition one.

Weight as a number your neck carries all day

1,280 g is a genuinely light figure for an open-face helmet, and it matters beyond the number itself: every gram a helmet weighs is carried by your neck through an entire ride, not just absorbed in the instant it is built to survive. A lighter shell shows its value less in a first impression and more at the end of a long day, in how much less fatigued your neck feels compared with a heavier lid doing the same job.

Ventilation on an open shell

Side air inlets feed the visor area directly, with none of the ducting complexity a chin bar forces on a full-face design. An open face already handles a large share of its own cooling by leaving the lower face exposed to the airstream, and this shell's shape works with that rather than against it.

Visor: VZ360, side-locking

The fitted VZ360 visor unlocks from the side, is built for long-trip use with free positioning beyond fixed click-stops, and comes pre-equipped with a Max Vision Pinlock insert with adjustable tension. It carries anti-scratch treatment and sits on a four-point anchoring system. Every tinted or iridium option for this visor family is sold separately and marked for racing use only — not a road-legal fit on this or any other decor sharing the shell.

Wind noise, honestly

A lighter shell and a painted graphic change nothing about the aerodynamics of an open lower face: no chin bar means no seal, and this helmet is louder at speed than a full-face by the same construction logic that applies to every jet helmet on the market. No decibel figure is published for it, so none is invented here to fill that gap.

Where this decor sits on price

At €319.99, Speed-Tech Mat is the most expensive decor in the RS Jet pairing — above both plain Carbon finishes at €279.99 and well above the standard RS Jet shell's single entry point at €249.99. Set against the wider field, it lands inside the Skwal i3 Jet's own €289.99–€349.99 band, the closest competing open-face helmet with genuinely comparable positioning, though that one adds an LED brake light this shell does not have.

Spare parts, later

The VZ360 visor and Pinlock 120 insert fitted here are stocked under the same Shark part numbers used across the whole RS Jet range, graphic decor or plain. A scratched visor on this helmet is exactly as easy to replace as one on the plainest decor in the line.

Fit from the shell

Six sizes cover this helmet, XS through XXL. Shark's own material for this decor does not state how many separate shell moulds sit behind those six sizes, so that figure is left unstated here rather than guessed at from a sibling model's specification — the six-size span itself is confirmed, and that is the part worth relying on when choosing a size.

What this helmet does not have

No SHARP rating exists for this helmet under any name the UK programme's own listings return. No MIPS, no DOT or Snell approval, no published wind-noise figure, and no LED system of any kind. Speed-Tech Mat is one of three current decors on this shell, the only one carrying a painted graphic rather than an exposed weave finish, and its own weight figure is genuinely lighter than its two Carbon siblings rather than a rounding difference.

In the box

The clear visor ships fitted with its Max Vision Pinlock 120 insert already mounted, alongside reflective bands and Shark's standard documentation. SENA and Sharktooth intercom compatibility is built into the shell from the factory, unaffected by the graphic layer over it, and the matte finish takes the same care as any other matte shell — no wax, no polish compound, a soft cloth and water only.
