DescriptionThe whole story

Matt black takes the shine out and leaves the geometry. On a flip-up that is arguably the better reading — the chin-guard line and the pivot covers become structure rather than reflections.

A chin guard that opens — and the P/J question

🔵 Note also what is not listed here: unlike MT's Atom 2 SV and Braker SV, the Genesis R SV carries ECE 22.06 only, without a DOT approval alongside it.

Irrelevant for European riding; worth knowing if the helmet will ever be used in the United States.

About the matt black finish

A modular helmet is handled constantly: the chin guard opens at every stop, the helmet comes off at every proper one, and it gets carried by whichever part is nearest. A flat finish absorbs that low-level marking because there is no clear coat for a scuff to catch in. 🔵 The trade is conspicuity, on a helmet bought for long distances on roads you do not know. Matt also holds dry dust more visibly than gloss, and it is washed rather than polished — abrasive polish leaves a permanent shiny patch.

HIRP, ECE 22.06 — and the weight MT does not publish

What a thermoplastic shell means in practice: it is injection-moulded rather than laid up by hand, which makes it cheaper to produce and heavier than a composite of equal strength. On a modular the difference matters more, because the format already carries a weight penalty.

🔵 The Genesis R SV's shell is HIRP, homologated to ECE 22.06.

The integrated sun visor

🔵 With the shield down and the main visor closed you are looking through two surfaces, and any scratch or fog on either becomes visible. Keep both clean, and never wipe either dry — road dust scratches the shield as readily as the visor.

It retracts fully into the shell rather than sitting in your upper field of view.

The 935 visor and the Pinlock you buy separately

Fogging is decided at low speed — junctions, traffic, waiting — where there is no airflow to clear a visor. On a flip-up you have one option a fixed full-face does not: open the chin guard.

🔵 Whether that is legal on the move depends on a P/J marking MT does not document. Stationary, it is simply the fastest way to clear a misted visor.

Interior, fit and intercom spaces

Fit is the specification that matters most and the one no description settles for you. A loose helmet moves under braking and rotates in a crash; on a modular of this weight a poor fit shows itself sooner than on a lighter helmet.

🔵 Try it on and keep it on for ten minutes. Measure around the widest part of your head, about 1–2 cm above the eyebrows.

The micrometric closure

What a micrometric closure gives you over a simple buckle is fine adjustment. You are not choosing between two holes; you are setting the strap to the millimetre and clicking to the same place every time.

🔵 That is worth having on a helmet you fasten in gloves, in the rain, in a hurry.

Where it sits in MT's range

Within this model the price ladder is entirely paint. The Pure solids at 115 € and the graphic versions at 127 € share the same shell, the same visor, the same sun shield and the same closure.

🔵 The cheapest Genesis R SV protects exactly as well as the most expensive.

When something wears out

Helmets are consumables with a long life rather than permanent objects. MT, like every manufacturer, recommends replacement after around five years of use regardless of condition — and immediately after any real impact, because the EPS crushes once and does not recover.

🔵 On a flip-up, also check the pivot and seals annually.

In the box

Specification

  • Model — MT-Helmets Genesis R SV
  • Part number — 137600PA1203
  • Colour — Pure A1 matt — Matt black
  • HomologationECE 22.06 — 🔴 ECE only; unlike MT's Atom 2 SV and Braker SV there is no DOT approval
  • 🔴 P/J dual homologationnot documented by MT. P/J is what makes riding with the chin guard raised legal in most of Europe — check the approval label on the helmet before relying on it
  • 🔴 Safety rating — none — SHARP has never listed the Genesis R SV, and modular helmets are rarely tested by the programme. No ADAC or Snell result, and no independent road test has been published
  • Helmet type — Modular / flip-up, touring
  • ShellHIRP (High Impact Resistant Polymer)
  • 🔴 Weightnot published by MT. Around 1650 g is our estimate for a HIRP modular of this class, by comparison with the Atom 2 SV at roughly 1.7 kg. Treat it as an estimate rather than a specification
  • Sizes — XS to XXL (six sizes)
  • Chin guard — flip-up with a robust modular locking system
  • Visor935 with a wide field of vision
  • 🔴 Anti-fog — ready for Pinlock® DKS279 or DKS002neither insert is supplied
  • Sun visor — integrated drop-down shield
  • Retention — micrometric closure
  • Interior — fully removable and washable, with intercom-ready spaces
  • Communication — intercom-ready — no system supplied
  • Impact liner — expanded polystyrene — crushes once and does not recover; replace the helmet after any real impact
  • Serviceability — visor, Pinlock lens, sun shield, lining and cheek pads all available separately
  • Flip-up maintenance — check the chin-guard pivot and its seals annually — dust and water are what seize a modular mechanism
  • Compared with the Atom 2 SV — that helmet adds DOT approval, the MT-FSOS and MT-ESLS visor systems, a supplied Pinlock DKS512 lens and a chin curtain, for around 38 € more on the same HIRP platform
  • Manufacturer — MT-Helmets (MT Helmets, Spain)
  • Sizing note — measure around the widest part of your head, about 1–2 cm above the eyebrows, and try the size the chart gives you. A helmet that can be rolled forward off your head with the strap fastened is too large
  • Care — wash the lining by hand a few times a season; never wipe the visor or the sun shield dry, as road dust scratches both permanently
  • Replacement guidance — after around five years of use regardless of condition, and immediately after any impact
  • Compared with the Braker SV — MT's fixed full-face costs the same 115 € and adds DOT approval and a nose deflector, but cannot open at a stop. The question is simply whether you will use the chin guard
  • Worth budgeting — a Pinlock DKS279 or DKS002 anti-fog insert before the first cold month — neither is supplied, and a winter commute mists the visor at every stop without one
  • Ordering spare optics — the 935 visor and the DKS279 / DKS002 Pinlock lenses are specific to this model. They do not interchange with the MT-V-28 / DKS435 parts used on MT's full-face helmets, nor with the MT-V-35 / DKS512 parts on the Atom 2 SV — order by designation rather than by helmet name
  • Head protection — full-face when closed — the chin and jaw are covered, which is the largest protective difference between helmet types
  • Made for — commuting, touring and long distances where the chin guard earns its keep at every stop — a flip-up carries 150–250 g over a fixed full-face for that convenience

“Quiet, comfortable and easy to live with, with a chin bar that opens cleanly. What it lacks is any independent test result and the padding depth of the premium flip-ups — on a two-week trip you would feel the difference.”
