The DS is the road-leaning half of Voge's large adventure pair, and the obvious advice would stop there: tarmac machine, standard medium, next question. It is not quite that simple, because the air a filter meets is set by where a motorcycle lives at least as much as by how it is ridden. A 900 DS kept on sealed roads in a dry farming region, behind harvest traffic and past unmade verges, can take in more airborne mineral dust in one summer than a weekend gravel tourist in a wet climate meets all year.
Key Features
- Dry special non-woven polyester rated at 7 microns of filtration
- 560 l/m²/sec of rated airflow, the strictest end of the Sprint Filter range
- No oil at any point, keeping the sensors in the intake tract clean
- Slots into the series airbox in place of the original element, with no changes elsewhere
- Near enough double the filtering surface of other performance elements
- Cleaned and refitted indefinitely, with a two-year warranty from purchase
The question that actually decides it
Not what the bike is for, but what it breathes. Season matters — a dry late summer puts field dust into the air for weeks at a time. So does the road surface at the edges, the traffic ahead, and how much of the year is spent behind something agricultural. A 900 DS used in that setting is filtering harder air than a bike that occasionally sees a gravel car park, and it does so continuously rather than in bursts. Where that describes your riding, the strictest medium in the catalogue has an argument on a road bike, and it works out to the same argument an off-road machine would make.
And the case against
For most owners of a 900 DS it will not describe the riding, and then the answer is the standard P08. The reason is arithmetic. This medium filters at 7 microns and is rated at 560 l/m²/sec; the P08 filters at 80 and is rated at 5,050 — some nine times the airflow through the same area of material. Finer holds back more and passes less: a trade with two directions, not a ranking with a top. Paying that on a machine that mostly breathes clean touring air is paying for retention that is not being used. Neither element, it should be said, makes a standard Valico noticeably more powerful — the PM188T12 is a filtration choice from beginning to end.
Care and cleaning
Nothing is consumed in servicing it. A compressor line applied to the clean face lifts the load back out of the mat; when the element has taken on more than air can move, lukewarm water and a mild detergent clear the rest and it is rinsed until the water runs clean. Then it dries in the open air, without heat of any kind and well away from any flame, and returns to the airbox only once fully dry and completely unoiled. Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet is under the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Voge Valico 900 DS of 2024 to 2026, replacing the standard element in the series airbox. Eleven machines from three manufacturers share it, spanning the Voge Valico models, the Kove 800 X and BMW's middleweight F range. The complete list is in the Fitment tab.
