There is an obvious reason to reach for a finer material, which is the surface you ride on, and a second reason that has nothing to do with the surface at all. On a machine of this size the second is the larger. An engine of this capacity, ridden the way an RR tends to be ridden, moves an enormous volume of air every minute, and whatever is suspended in that air turns up at the panel in proportion to the volume. At identical air quality, this twin samples far more of it per hour than the small singles for which a dusty-conditions material is usually bought.
Key Features
- Special dry nonwoven, filtration rated at 14 microns, flow given as 1,800 l/m²/sec
- Chosen for what it holds back, with the lower rate accepted as the cost
- Never treated with oil, so its behaviour does not depend on the last service
- Slots into the standard RR airbox in place of the original panel, unmodified
- Cleaned with compressed air and returned to use rather than thrown away
- Covered by a two-year warranty and built to last the life of the machine
Exposure is a rate, not a road condition
The one drawing more air through a panel of equal area is asking it to process more of everything the air contains, and a large twin worked hard through the gears does exactly that. The argument survives on clean roads, because clean is a relative word: tyre and brake wear, fine grit lifted by traffic and the general burden of a summer's air are all present in quantities that scale with the volume drawn.
What has to be given up for it
The arithmetic is not hidden. Where the standard weave is credited with 5,050 l/m²/sec, this nonwoven is credited with 1,800 — roughly a third — and Sprint Filter publishes no retention percentage for it, so the gain is described by its micron rating alone. It is certainly not a power modification: an element dropped into a series airbox does not make a series motorcycle noticeably stronger, whichever material is inside it. What the swap buys is a low starting restriction that comes back at every wash instead of ebbing away across a season.
Care and cleaning
Service on a PM190P14 begins and usually ends with compressed air, applied on the clean side and worked outward so the load leaves by the route it arrived. Where the fabric has collected something stickier, lukewarm water and a mild detergent will lift it, with rinsing continued until the water comes off clean. Drying is passive: moving air, however long that takes, and no heat source of any description, since a hot-air gun or a flame will ruin the fabric far faster than dust ever could. Refit dry. The maintenance sheet is under the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Listed for the KTM 1290 Super Duke RR built from 2021 to 2023, in the standard airbox. Three motorcycles share this element code — the RR, the 1290 Super Duke R and the 1390 Super Duke R — and the Fitment tab shows the year window for each. Since the RR takes the same part as the volume model, ordering by code and build year is the reliable route.
