Start with the ratio, because it is the first thing anyone notices. This element is listed at roughly two and a third times what the standard P08 for the same airbox costs, and a little over three times the P14. The difference buys one property: a rated 15,000 l/m²/sec through the panel, where the standard weave is rated at 5,050. Everything else — dry polyester, no oil, cleaned with air, specified for the life of the machine — the cheaper element already does. On a K 1600 Bagger that is a sentence worth reading twice before ordering.
Key Features
- The racing weave of the P08 family: woven polyester, dry, with no oil at any stage
- Rated flow of 15,000 l/m²/sec through an 85 µm aperture, the top of the published range
- Test retention of 95.22 per cent measured on 100-micron particles
- Filtering surface around double that of a typical performance panel
- Slots into the unmodified airbox where the paper element sat; no remap required
- Air-cleaned and reused instead of discarded, backed by two years of warranty
Who the ratio is for
There is a short and honest answer. This medium exists for engines run at sustained full load in a controlled environment — Sprint Filter, by its own account the most widely used air filter in MotoGP and World Superbike, sells it to the people who work there. A K 1600 Bagger does not live there: a long-legged, heavily bodied touring machine whose intake is nowhere near the first thing standing in its way. If this page has a job, it is to say that the standard PM187S is the sensible element here, and that anyone ordering the F1-85 should be able to name their reason.
What the price does not include
The characteristics people buy Sprint Filter for are in the cheaper element too. Dry polyester with no oil in it, so nothing can migrate onto a sensor. A drop-in fit with no cutting, no adapter, no remap. Compressed air instead of an annual purchase, a design life matched to the motorcycle's, two years of warranty. None of it is a premium feature; all of it is standard across the range. The premium buys a rate — and no drop-in element, this one included, adds noticeable power to a standard Bagger.
Care and cleaning
Servicing the PM187S F1-85 is the same dry routine as the rest of the range: compressed air on the clean face, driven outward, taking the road load off the weave without working the fibres. A wash — warm water, a trace of mild detergent, a rinse until the water leaves clean — is for the residue air cannot lift. Then the one step with a hard rule: drying happens in moving air at its own speed, with no heater, no oven and no flame near it, and the element goes back dry and unoiled. The maintenance sheet lives in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW K 1600 Bagger of 2017, a direct replacement in the series airbox with nothing modified. That housing carries all four variants of the range, which is why every medium drawn for it is catalogued against each name in turn, with the relevant years shown in the Fitment tab.
