A dual-sport motorcycle is bought by people who do not check the forecast first, and rain is a load case the airbox meets far more often than anyone plans for. Water arrives as spray thrown off the road, as the mist that hangs about after a shower has passed, and as the damp that never quite leaves the air on a cold morning. It gets into the intake tract on every motorcycle ridden in real weather. What differs is what the element does about it.

Paper takes up water and does not give it back

Cellulose absorbs. A paper element that has been through a wet week swells at the pleat folds, and the swelling closes the very apertures the filter is rated by; when it dries out it does not return to the shape it started with. Repeat that over a season and the element is permanently more restrictive than the day it was fitted, without ever having been particularly dirty. There is no warning and no code — the engine simply pulls a little less willingly in spring than it did in autumn, which most riders put down to the weather being different.

Polyester gets wet and then dries

The P08 CM170S is woven from polyester threads of at least 22 micrometres. It is not hygroscopic in the way paper is: it takes on surface water, sheds it, and its aperture afterwards is the aperture from before. That property is also what makes washing it a sensible service rather than a destructive one — lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinsed until the water runs clear, air-dried fully and refitted dry. Never with heat and never near a flame. There is no oiling step to remember afterwards, because the medium has never needed one.
