Eleven model years is a long run for a flagship. The 1290 Super Adventure R and S have been in KTM's catalogue since 2015, through several revisions of bodywork, electronics and suspension, and through the whole of that time the element in the airbox has been the same part. That continuity is worth thinking about, because it says something about which components on a motorcycle are model decisions and which are architecture.

The service item you eventually stop buying

Over eleven years of ownership a paper element is not one purchase but a repeating one, and the total is not the sticker price of a filter — it is that price multiplied by however many times the interval comes round, plus the occasions when the part was not in stock and the bike waited. The P08 PM155S changes the shape of that entirely. It is washable and reusable, and Sprint Filter design it to last the life of the motorcycle. The first fitting is the last purchase; everything after that is compressed air and ten minutes with the seat off.

What eleven years does to availability

There is a second effect, and long-term owners feel it more sharply. Consumables for older model years drift out of stock as dealers order against current demand. A part that spans thirteen KTM and Husqvarna machines — from the 692 cc Husqvarna singles through the 790 and 890 twins to this 1301 cc V-twin — does not have that problem, because several of those models are still being built. And an element you clean rather than replace is one you are not depending on the supply chain for in the first place.

Care and cleaning

Blow it through from the clean side with compressed air, working outwards. For a deeper clean, wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear, and let it dry fully in air — never with heat, never with a flame.
