The R was the homologation bike: titanium rods, a lighter crankshaft, a shorter final drive and a specification written so that the racing department could use the parts it wanted. Machines built for that reason age differently from ordinary superbikes. They are kept, they are ridden on circuits rather than commuted on, and the parts that keep them running get scarcer every year. An air filter you clean instead of consume answers both of those facts, and PM127S is exactly that.

A part that does not need finding again

Sourcing consumables for a limited-production model becomes an ownership skill in itself. Every paper panel you fit is a part you will have to find again in two years, from a supply chain with progressively less reason to hold it. This one is bought once. It is shared with nineteen other Ducatis, which keeps it in circulation regardless of what happens to R production numbers, and it is designed to still be in the bike when those nineteen have moved on too.

Between runs, in the paddock

Circuit maintenance happens where the bike is parked, with whatever is in the van. A gauze that must be washed, fully dried and re-oiled at the correct dose is a workshop job pretending to be a trackside one; it gets skipped, and the next run goes out on a loaded filter. This element comes out, is blown through from the clean face and goes straight back, dry. There is no performance promise attached to any of that, and none should be read into it — the value is a restriction that stays where Ducati set it instead of creeping upward all season.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air is the routine, always directed from the clean side outward. Water is the exception rather than the rule: warm, with a mild detergent, rinsed until it runs clear, then dried entirely in air. Heat of any kind will ruin the cloth, so no heater, no flame, no gun.
