The dirtiest air a large adventure bike ever meets is not met on the move. It is met at walking pace on a loose surface — arriving in a gravel car park, turning round on a farm track, paddling through the dusty entrance to a campsite. The wheels lift a cloud, there is no road speed to carry it away, and the engine stands in the middle of it and breathes.

Low speed, no airflow, and dust you made yourself

Those few minutes are disproportionate. The concentration around a manoeuvring bike on gravel is far higher than anything encountered at speed, the engine is running the whole time, and none of it registers as riding, so nobody counts it. Multiply that by a touring season of car parks, ferry queues, service areas and campsites and the arithmetic stops being trivial — particularly on a machine whose owner measures its year in thousands of kilometres and thinks of the intake, if at all, in terms of the open road.

Being straight about which element this is

PM160S is the road medium for this airbox: the widest aperture and the highest flow Sprint Filter lists for it. If a trip means days rather than minutes on unsealed surfaces, the extreme-conditions T12 element — rated at 7 microns and 560 l/m²/sec — is the better answer, and it is not this one. The Multistrada V4 is the only one of these eight machines catalogued for that medium, which is a fair indication of who Sprint Filter expects to leave the tarmac. Choose by the route rather than by which figure reads higher. What neither of them does is add power; a standard V4 is not held back by the panel in its airbox.

Care and cleaning

After a dusty stage, air is enough: apply it to the clean side and work outward until the weave releases nothing more. Back home, wash it in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water is clear, and dry it fully in air — heat in any form, flames included, ends the element permanently.
