DescriptionThe whole story▼
This isn't a helmet with a light bolted on afterward — the LED brake-light system, front and rear, reading the helmet's own deceleration, is what the Skwal i3 was built around, and Shark calls it a world first for a production helmet. Vibetrack wraps it in a black shell with a pink-to-purple diagonal stripe graphic across the flank.
How the brake light actually works
The Skwal i3 doesn't need to know what your throttle or brake lever are doing, because it measures the one thing that actually matters: how fast your head is decelerating. A three-axis accelerometer handles that, driving red rear LEDs at three flashes a second in normal use and five a second under hard braking, while front-facing white LEDs run on their own for general visibility, with no wiring or pairing to the bike anywhere in the system.
Visor and Pinlock
A central grip and central locking system releases the visor without tools, one of several features the Skwal i3 shares with the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup through Shark's VZ400 visor family: Optical Class 1 certification, a pre-fitted Pinlock 70 with adjustable tension, a moulded vortex generator, a lens varying from 3 mm to 2.2 mm, and an anti-scratch coating. Photochromic tinting isn't offered on any of the five — the IRID list stops at the Aeron GP, Aeron and Race R Pro.
Sun visor and everyday usability
Three quiet conveniences define daily use on the Skwal i3: an internal sun visor that drops from a crown slider, an interior redesigned so glasses don't dig in, and a shell that's intercom-ready for Sharktooth or SENA without modification. Shark's 5-year warranty covers the helmet as a whole.
Wind noise, honestly
The base of the shell is where wind noise usually gets in, and on the Skwal i3 it's closed off by a substantial neck roll and a generous chin curtain — an independent long-term review credits both directly for noise levels it describes as not unduly loud, with no localised source found anywhere on the helmet. No decibel figure exists, and none is invented here.
Vibetrack: colour, finish, first impression
a black shell with a pink-to-purple diagonal stripe graphic across the flank sets the first impression; the gloss coat sets how it ages. Expect a helmet that still shines after a wash, provided fine scratches are kept in check.
This decor is aimed squarely at the daily rider, not the occasional one — the brake light's usefulness is proportional to how much traffic you actually ride through, which makes it a commuting feature first and a novelty second. Buy it for the ride to work, not for the one weekend a year it might get noticed at a bike meet — the light doesn't know or care whether anyone's admiring the graphic, only whether there's a car behind you when you brake.
Fit across the size run
Six sizes span XS to XXL on the Skwal i3. The shell-count question is one we can't answer with a confirmed source for this particular helmet, so it's left open here rather than guessed — the size chart is unaffected either way.
Where the Skwal i3 sits on price
Set this decor's €349.99 against Shark's own range: Ridill 2 from €189.99, D-Skwal 3 from €219.99, Skwal Cup €269.99–€339.99 with no LED at all, and the Skwal i Cup from €329.99 — the one other helmet here with the same brake-light system.
Spare parts, later
The D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup, Skwal i Cup and this Skwal i3 all draw their visor from the same VZ400 family and their fog insert from the same Pinlock 70 — which means a replacement for any one of them is a replacement for all five, stock-wise.
What this helmet does not have
The absence list, for anyone who prefers facts to marketing: no SHARP rating for this specific model (Skwal and Skwal 2 have four stars each; the i3 has none), ECE 22.06 only, no FIM suffix, no MIPS, no electronic quick-release system, no tear-off posts, no IRID photochromic compatibility, and a micrometric buckle rather than a double-D ring. The German road-legal status of the brake light stays on this list too, because it's genuinely unsettled: Shark's manual defers to the rider's own country's legislation instead of asserting approval, no E-mark accompanies the light, and no source used here confirms it either way.
Power, charging and what happens when it's flat
Charge time is roughly three hours over USB-C for about twelve hours of flashing-light runtime, drawn from a sealed battery that isn't user-replaceable and a cable that stores inside the neck protection rather than trailing loose. Automatic standby follows 60 seconds without movement; a full shutdown follows 72 hours of inactivity. Right before it runs out, per Shark's own manual, the system can still be switched on but shuts off again almost instantly — charging, not a new cell, brings it back.
What ECE 22.06 actually tests
The abrasive anvil is new to 22.06, and it matters because most real falls aren't clean vertical drops — they're glancing, twisting impacts, which is exactly what the oblique-impact test simulates. It's one part of a standard that also tests eighteen impact points instead of five, at multiple speeds, and scores a Brain Injury Criterion for rotational energy the old 22.05 never captured. Every Skwal i3 is tested with visor, Pinlock and a fitted comms unit in place, under a standard mandatory in the EU since January 2024. No FIM suffix: 2206 only.
Shell, closure and ventilation
The EPS inside the Skwal i3's Lexan polycarbonate shell isn't a single block of foam — it's graded, varying in density through the structure to manage different impact forces in different zones. The closure is a micrometric buckle rather than a double-D ring, ratcheting to an exact tension with one motion, and ventilation follows a multichannel layout of front intakes and rear extractors, counted independently at four and two.
Weight as neck load over a day's ride
Carrying a helmet's weight for an entire day is a different experience from lifting it off a shelf, and the figure that predicts the former is 1,570 g — Shark's own number for the Skwal i3's smallest shell, independently matched by a long-term press review that doesn't specify size. It sits inside the roughly 1,250–1,800 g band most road-legal full-face helmets in our range occupy.
Box contents
The helmet, Pinlock 70 pre-installed, the LED system's USB-C cable in the neck protection, and Shark's paperwork covering both the 5-year warranty and the light system's own instructions — everything needed, nothing extra to buy.
