DescriptionThe whole story▼
There's a reason this helmet gets written up in motorcycle press as more than just another Shark shell: integrated LED brake lights, front and rear, reacting directly to the helmet's own motion. Shark's claim is the world's first production helmet built this way, and Light-Blur carries it under a black shell with a bold cobalt-blue motion-blur graphic cut through with thin red pinstripes.
How the brake light actually works
Compared with an aftermarket helmet light that clips on and blinks constantly, the Skwal i3's system only reacts to genuine deceleration, measured by its own three-axis accelerometer rather than borrowed from the motorcycle's brake circuit. Three flashes a second mark ordinary braking, five mark a hard stop, and the rate change itself is the signal — a driver behind reads urgency in the flash rate, not just presence of a light.
Where the Skwal i3 sits on price
Before deciding, it helps to see four related Shark helmets side by side. Ridill 2 anchors the bottom from €189.99, D-Skwal 3 follows from €219.99, the Skwal Cup runs €269.99–€339.99 without an LED, and the Skwal i Cup — LED-equipped, like this one — starts from €329.99. This decor: €349.99.
Spare parts, later
Nothing about the Skwal i3's visor is exclusive to it: the VZ400 family and the Pinlock 70 insert fitted inside it are shared parts, carried under the same numbers as the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup — a scratched lens is simply a spare-parts order.
What this helmet does not have
Full disclosure, upfront: the Skwal i3 doesn't have a SHARP star rating of its own — that programme tested the earlier Skwal and Skwal 2 (four stars each), not this model. It also doesn't have an FIM homologation suffix (ECE 22.06 only), a MIPS liner, an electronic quick-release system, tear-off posts, or IRID photochromic compatibility, and its buckle is a micrometric ratchet rather than a double-D ring. The one point that needs more care than a bullet point: German road-traffic legality for the integrated brake light is genuinely unresolved. Shark's manual asks riders to check their own country's rules instead of claiming approval; there's no E-mark for the light in the documentation we found; and no source, manufacturer or independent, states a confirmed answer either way.
Power, charging and what happens when it's flat
Shark built the power system to be low-maintenance rather than high-capacity: a sealed battery, charged over USB-C in about three hours, delivering roughly twelve hours of flashing-light use, with the cable stored inside the neck protection rather than left loose. It sleeps itself after 60 seconds without movement and shuts down fully after 72 hours of inactivity. The manual's own description of a near-flat battery is that it switches on and then off again almost instantly — a recharge, not a battery swap, is the only fix.
What ECE 22.06 actually tests
Rotational forces are the headline addition in ECE 22.06, scored through a Brain Injury Criterion that the older 22.05 standard never measured at all — a response to research showing that a glancing, twisting impact injures differently than a straight one. The rest of the standard grew alongside it: eighteen impact points instead of five, several impact speeds instead of one, and an oblique-impact test against an abrasive anvil. Every Skwal i3 carries this certification, tested complete with visor, Pinlock and a fitted comms unit, mandatory in the EU since January 2024. No FIM suffix on the certificate: 2206 alone.
Shell, closure and ventilation
Riders who've used a double-D ring on other helmets will notice the Skwal i3 does it differently: a micrometric buckle, ratcheting to an exact tension in small steps and releasing with one pull, rather than threading a strap through two rings. It sits on a shell of Lexan polycarbonate over a multi-density EPS liner, with air moving through a multichannel system of front intakes and rear extractors — four and two respectively, by an independent count.
Weight as neck load over a day's ride
Put a helmet on for five minutes and weight barely registers; wear it for a whole day and it's the first thing you notice. Shark's 1,570 g figure for the Skwal i3 — for the smallest shell, matched independently by a press review that doesn't specify size either — sits inside the roughly 1,250–1,800 g band most road-legal full-face helmets in our range occupy, closer to the centre than either extreme.
Visor and Pinlock
One visor family, five helmets: VZ400 covers the Skwal i3 along with the D-Skwal 3, Ridill 2, Skwal Cup and Skwal i Cup, all to Optical Class 1 with a pre-fitted, tension-adjustable Pinlock 70 as standard. A moulded vortex generator and a lens tapering from 3 mm to 2.2 mm complete the optical side; an anti-scratch coating and tool-free central-lock release handle daily use. The IRID photochromic list doesn't include any of them — only the Aeron GP, Aeron and Race R Pro qualify for that tint.
Sun visor and everyday usability
Between the crown-slider internal sun visor, an interior reworked for glasses without pinching, and a shell that's pre-configured for a Sharktooth or SENA intercom, the Skwal i3 answers three common daily-riding questions without needing an accessory catalogue. Shark's 5-year warranty covers the helmet throughout.
Wind noise, honestly
We could invent a decibel figure for the Skwal i3 and it would look authoritative on a spec sheet; we're not going to, because none exists in the sources we trust. What we can say, from an independent long-term review, is that noise wasn't found to be unduly loud and no part of the shell stood out as a localised source — credited to a substantial neck roll and a generous chin curtain doing their job at the base.
How Light-Blur wears over time
Gloss coats on this range keep their shine with regular cleaning but will show fine scratches sooner than matte — a detail worth knowing about a shell finished in a black shell with a bold cobalt-blue motion-blur graphic cut through with thin red pinstripes.
The everyday argument for this decor is straightforward: more time in traffic means more chances for the LED brake light to actually do something useful, which makes it a better fit for a daily commuter than an occasional weekend rider.
Fit across the size run
Six sizes, XS through XXL. A shell-count figure for this specific helmet isn't confirmed in the sources we're using, so it's omitted rather than assumed — go by the size chart for an accurate fit.
