DescriptionThe whole story▼
E2 pairs grey with fluorescent yellow and is by a clear margin the most visible helmet in the Atom 2 SV range. On a touring helmet ridden through mixed European weather, that is a specification rather than a preference.
A chin guard that opens — and the P/J question
Two mechanisms on this helmet have to work every time: the chin-guard release and the strap closure. MT uses a single-button release for the first and a double-hook MT-MDTC for the second, specifically against accidental opening.
🔵 On the homologation question, MT documents ECE 22.06 and DOT but not P/J.
About the Highlands E2 graphic
Fluorescent pigments convert ultraviolet into visible light, which is why they appear to glow rather than merely to be bright — and why they keep working in exactly the conditions where ordinary colours fail: overcast, dusk, rain and the flat grey of a winter motorway. Setting it against grey rather than white keeps the helmet from looking like workwear while the grey absorbs the dirt a bright ground would show. 🔵 Fluorescent fades faster than any other pigment type under sustained sun, and only storage out of direct light slows it.
HIRP, ECE 22.06 and DOT
🔵 Compare this against a composite modular honestly. A fibreglass flip-up of equal capability would be 150–300 g lighter and cost two to three times as much. That is the entire argument.
The Atom 2 SV is HIRP at roughly 1.7 kg, with dual ECE 22.06 / DOT approval.
MT-ESP — a sun visor that meets the nose deflector
The sun shield mechanism is the part of a helmet most likely to develop a rattle over years, and on a flip-up there is more of it to go wrong. On a new helmet it should deploy and retract cleanly without play.
🔵 The Atom 2 SV's is the extended-coverage MT-ESP shield.
MT-FSOS, MT-ESLS and the Pinlock in the box
🔵 Order visors and lenses by designation. This helmet uses the MT-V-35 visor and the DKS512 Pinlock lens — neither interchanges with the MT-V-28 series and DKS435 used on MT's full-face models.
FogOff FOG013 is the compatible alternative anti-fog insert.
The double-hook closure
The MT-Micrometric+ closure fastens one-handed, which matters on a helmet worn for long days with frequent stops. It also releases one-handed, which is the part you appreciate at a fuel stop in the rain.
🔵 Check the adjustment every few months — ratchets drift, and a strap that has loosened lets the helmet move.
A spoiler that hides the exhaust
🔵 The chin curtain supplied with the helmet works against the ventilation rather than with it, and that is deliberate: it closes the gap under the chin guard, which is the main noise and cold-air path.
Fit it in winter, remove it in summer. It comes out without tools.
Interior, fit and the chin curtain
Measure around the widest part of your head, about 1–2 cm above the eyebrows, and compare against the chart on this page. The Atom 2 SV runs from XS to XXL.
🔵 Between two sizes, take the one that does not move when you push the helmet forward with the strap fastened.
Intercom preparation
Intercom preparation at this price is not a given, and on a modular helmet it is close to essential — there is little point buying a helmet for distance and then having nowhere to put a communicator.
🔵 The system itself is a separate purchase.
Where it sits in MT's range
The most useful way to place this helmet: it is a distance helmet for riders who want one helmet that does everything, and it is specified accordingly — sun visor, anti-fog lens included, chin curtain, intercom preparation.
🔵 What it is not is light. At around 1.7 kg it is a modular, with everything that implies.
When something wears out
🔵 Replacement cheek pads are the most useful spare part on any helmet and the least often bought. They correct a fit that has loosened with wear and solve a hot spot that would otherwise mean a different helmet.
Genuine MT pads and complete linings for the Atom 2 SV are available.

Specification
- Model — MT-Helmets Atom 2 SV
- Part number — 1335C94E2203
- Colour — Highlands E2 — Matt, grey and neon yellow
- Homologation — ECE 22.06 and DOT; MT states the helmet exceeds both
- 🔴 P/J dual homologation — not documented by MT. P/J is what makes riding with the chin guard raised legal in most of Europe — check the approval label on the helmet before relying on it
- 🔴 Safety rating — none — SHARP has never listed the Atom 2 SV, and modular helmets are rarely tested by the programme. No ADAC or Snell result, and no independent road test has been published
- Helmet type — Modular / flip-up, all-round touring
- Shell — HIRP (High Impact Resistant Polymer), with a rear spoiler concealing the ventilation exhaust
- Weight — approx. 1.7 kg — typical for a thermoplastic flip-up; the format carries 150–250 g over a fixed full-face
- Sizes — XS to XXL (six sizes)
- Chin guard — single-button release, operable one-handed
- Visor — MT-V-35 with MT-FSOS fast opening including an automatic anti-fog position, and MT-ESLS release with a dedicated ventilation position
- Anti-fog — Pinlock® DKS512 included as standard; FogOff FOG013 is a compatible alternative
- Sun visor — MT-ESP retractable shield with extended coverage that aligns with the nose deflector
- Retention — MT-Micrometric+ with a double-hook MT-MDTC engagement against accidental opening
- Interior — fully removable and washable
- Also supplied — chin curtain
- Communication — intercom-ready — no system supplied
- Impact liner — expanded polystyrene — crushes once and does not recover; replace the helmet after any real impact
- Serviceability — visor, Pinlock lens, sun shield, lining, cheek pads and chin curtain all available separately
- Flip-up maintenance — check the chin-guard pivot and its seals annually — dust and water are what seize a modular mechanism
- Manufacturer — MT-Helmets (MT Helmets, Spain)
- Replacement guidance — after around five years of use regardless of condition, and immediately after any impact
- Compared with the Thunder 4 R SV — that fixed full-face is around 200 g lighter and cannot open at a stop. Both use HIRP shells; only the Atom 2 SV adds DOT approval alongside ECE 22.06
- Sizing note — measure around the widest part of your head, about 1–2 cm above the eyebrows, and try the size the chart gives you. A helmet that can be rolled forward off your head with the strap fastened is too large — and on a 1.7 kg modular a poor fit shows itself sooner than on a lighter helmet
- Care — wash the lining by hand a few times a season; never wipe the visor or the sun shield dry, as road dust scratches both permanently

“The modular mechanism works without snags and the padding holds up over distance. Against it: 1,700 g, no independent test result, and conflicting reports on how quiet it really is at speed.”
