The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
Everything most riders know about judging an air filter was learnt from paper: hold it up, look at the colour, decide. That test does not transfer here. A non-woven mat traps through its thickness rather than across its face, so the surface can look barely used while the material behind it carries a season's worth of dust — and it can look thoroughly grey and still be working exactly as intended.
Key Features
- Non-woven medium, dry throughout, with no oil film to read or renew
- A 14-micron filtration rating where the woven panel for this box is rated at 80
- Rated flow of 1,800 l/m²/sec against the 5,050 of that woven panel
- Takes the factory element's place in the standard airbox; no remap, no ducting change
- Cleared with compressed air and refitted, over and over, for the life of the machine
- Two-year warranty starting from the purchase date
The eye is the wrong instrument here
Depth media are built to hold their load inside, distributed through the material, which is precisely what makes them work at a fine rating without closing up immediately. The same property removes the visual cue. There is no colour that means "still fine" and none that means "do it now", and an owner waiting for the mat to look finished may wait a very long time or act far too late, with no way of telling which.
So use a habit instead of a look
Put the air line through it at every service, and again after any week that was obviously dusty, whether or not it appears to need it. Nothing is wasted by doing it early: the element is designed to be regenerated, so a cleaning that was not strictly necessary costs a few minutes and no material. Over the nine model years this XDiavel spans, that habit is the whole of the maintenance the intake requires, and it is worth being clear that none of it makes the motorcycle faster — a standard airbox was never the restriction.
Care and cleaning
Cleaning is a garage job of a few minutes: compressed air directed at the clean face and worked outward until the mat surrenders nothing more. Occasionally it will want water — warm, with a mild detergent, rinsed until clear, then dried right through in air. Heat destroys the material, so keep it clear of radiators, hot-air guns and flames, and refit PM127P14 dry. Sprint Filter's cleaning notes are filed in Downloads.
