The facts.

DescriptionThe whole story▼

Panniers, a top box and a passenger do not change how far a Multistrada travels. They change how hard it has to work to travel, and that is a different quantity. A loaded bike holds a larger throttle opening for the same road speed, a larger throttle opening is more air per kilometre, and the airbox keeps a faithful record of that while the odometer keeps none.

Key Features

  • A dry non-woven mat with no oil in it, before fitting or after any wash
  • Filtration rated at 14 microns, against 80 for the standard woven panel
  • Rated flow of 1,800 l/m²/sec — deliberately lower, and the reason this is a choice
  • Direct fit in the series airbox for the 1200, the S and the D|air alike
  • Cleaned with an air line and returned to the box rather than replaced
  • Two years of warranty beginning on the date of purchase

Air drawn is not distance covered

An element loads in proportion to the volume that passes through it, and that volume is set by throttle opening and engine speed rather than by the trip meter. Two people and full luggage over an Alpine pass move a great deal more air per kilometre than the same motorcycle solo on a motorway, so two Multistradas with identical mileage can arrive at completely different filter conditions. Service schedules cannot express this; they were written for one element in one imagined use.

What follows for a touring bike

The practical answer is to service the intake after the trip that was hard rather than at the number that came up. That is a cheap thing to do with an element built to be cleaned and put back, and an expensive habit with one that has to be bought each time. The finer rating fits the same logic: a loaded machine draws more of everything, including the fine material a coarser panel lets past. None of this shows up as performance — a standard 1200 is not held back by its airbox — but it does decide what the engine has been breathing by the end of a long summer.

Care and cleaning

Blow it out with an air line from the inner face outward; on tour that is the whole procedure and it takes no longer than checking tyre pressures. At home, when the mat has taken on more than air can move, wash it in warm water with a mild detergent and rinse it until the run-off is clear, then dry it in air until no trace of damp remains. Never over heat, never near a flame. PM127P14 goes back dry, with nothing to reapply. Downloads holds Sprint Filter's cleaning instructions.

Fitment & Compatibility

Covers the Ducati Multistrada 1200, the 1200 S and the 1200 D|air from 2015 to 2017. Eleven Ducati models take the same element — the Fitment tab has all of them.
