Sprint Filter PM217S F1-85 air filter

The facts.

DescriptionThe whole story▼

The Thruxton 1200 R went out of production in 2020, and that changes the arithmetic behind a filter more than it looks. An air filter is insurance, and the engine pays the excess. While a model is current, the excess is a warranty claim and a parts counter that has everything on the shelf. A few years after the last one was built, it is a search for pistons, liners and a machinist who will do the work. That is the frame in which the P08 F1-85 should be judged on this bike: a patented dry polyester racing medium rated at 15,000 l/m²/sec, roughly three times the airflow figure of the 80 µm standard P08, and in the manufacturer's test slightly more retentive as well.

Key Features

  • Sprint Filter's racing medium, developed for maximum airflow: 15,000 l/m²/sec from polyester threads of 22 µm diameter
  • Not a step coarser than the 80 µm P08, whatever the name suggests: 95.22 % of 100-micron particles retained against the P08's 93.13 %
  • Dry polyester that is never oiled, so no oil film travels downstream onto the sensors
  • It replaces the standard element in the standard airbox, without modification or remap
  • Washable, reusable, intended to last the life of the motorcycle
  • Two years of warranty are counted from the date of purchase

Insurance on a component that is getting scarcer

On this bike the insurance and the performance do not pull against each other. The 85 in the name describes no aperture; the weave is built from polyester threads from 22 µm in diameter, and in Sprint Filter's own test it holds back slightly more than the standard medium. The real question on a discontinued road bike is a different one. Mineral dust that reaches a cylinder wall does its work slowly, over tens of thousands of kilometres, and a Thruxton R kept and ridden for another decade will cover exactly that mileage — on standard intake and exhaust, with an engine that rarely calls for flow of this order.

When it is still the right call

There is a version of this bike for which the F1-85 is entirely correct: a Thruxton R that has become a track machine, run on an hours-based schedule with the top end inspected accordingly. Race preparation is where its flow is actually drawn on, because the intake and exhaust around it have been built to use it. For a road-registered Thruxton R the standard P08 is the medium to order, and on dusty or unsealed roads the P14 at 14 µm and 1,800 l/m²/sec goes further in the protective direction. Between P08 and P14 a finer weave retains more and flows less; the F1-85 is not the coarse end of that line, simply the high-flow medium beside it.

Care and cleaning

Direction matters more than force: compressed air enters the PM217S F1-85 on the clean side and leaves outwards, taking the load out the way it came in. The rest is water with a mild detergent, rinsed until the water runs clear, then a full dry in open air. Heat and flame are never used, and the element is refitted dry — at no stage of its life is it oiled. The maintenance sheet waits in the Downloads tab.

Fitment & Compatibility

Made for the Triumph Thruxton 1200 R, 2016–2020. The same element covers five machines built around this airbox — the Speed Twin 900 and Speed Twin 1200, and the Thruxton 1200 in R, RS and TFC form. The full list with model years is in the Fitment tab.
