A fair number of people come to a racing air filter for the wrong reason: they want the induction noise. It is worth saying at the outset that PM01S F1-85 will not give it to them. The element sits inside the sealed series airbox in the position the factory panel occupied, and the sound a Tuono V4 makes through its intake is set by the shape of that housing, its ducting and its resonators — none of which this part touches. What changes is the material the air passes through on its way in, and nothing about the route it takes to get there.
Key Features
- Dry polyester racing cloth, filtration rated at 85 µm
- Rated throughput of 15,000 l/m²/sec, the highest figure in the Sprint Filter range
- Never oiled — dry when supplied, dry in service, dry after every cleaning
- Roughly double the filtering area of a typical performance element, in the standard panel size
- Fits the series airbox in the factory position: no cutting, no repositioning, no remap
- Serviced and refitted rather than replaced, with two years of warranty from the date of purchase
What the coarse cloth is and is not
By Sprint Filter's own account this is the material behind the air filters most used in MotoGP, Moto3, World Superbike, Supersport and Superstock — a manufacturer statement about deployment, not an independent measurement, and worth reading as such. The specification underneath it is plain enough: an open weave that gives up retention for throughput. Nothing in that exchange makes a standard Tuono quicker. An element in an unmodified airbox leaves a series machine producing what it was certified to produce, and the genuine gains are a low intake resistance and a panel that is cleaned instead of discarded.
Who should be looking at it
The case for the open weave rests on how often the airbox is opened. It was drawn for machines whose panels come out between sessions, get blown through and go straight back in, and it loads more slowly than the closer grades precisely because it holds back less. A Tuono ridden on the road all season will meet neither the flow ceiling nor the service rhythm the cloth assumes, and is better served by the standard weave. A Tuono that spends its summers at track days, where the airbox is accessible and the dust in the paddock is coarse, is the machine this element was drawn around.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air does almost all the work on this medium: aim it from the clean side outward so the load leaves the way it arrived. Where an open weave has been through a wet or oily paddock, lukewarm water with a mild detergent restores it; rinse well and let the panel dry all the way through in moving air. Never use heat, a hot air gun or a flame to speed that up, and never oil the cloth. The Downloads tab carries the maintenance sheet.
Fitment & Compatibility
Specified for the airbox of the Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 and Tuono V4 1100 Factory, model years 2016 to 2020. In this medium the number covers four catalogue entries across two marques of the same group, each shown with its own model years in the Fitment tab.
