An air filter service on this triple is mostly labour. The element itself is a small part; getting to it is the job, and that job takes the same amount of time whether you fit a new paper cartridge afterwards or clean the one that was already in the airbox. The Sprint Filter P08 SM272S changes which half of that bill keeps coming back. It is a dry woven polyester element made to the shape of the standard airbox on the MT-09 and the MT-09 SP, and from the moment it is fitted every later service ends with the same element going back in rather than a new one being bought.
Key Features
- Woven from polyester threads of 22 microns in diameter and upwards, laid up as a single dry layer
- Never oiled at any point in its life, so nothing can be carried off the P08 medium onto the intake sensors
- Rated at 80 microns of filtration and 5,050 litres per square metre per second of airflow
- The filtering area is roughly double that of other performance filters
- It replaces the original element in the standard airbox — nothing modified, nothing remapped, homologation unaffected
- Cleaned with compressed air and refitted rather than replaced; the warranty runs two years from purchase
Where the recurring cost actually sits
A paper element is specified as a consumable. The schedule sets an interval, the interval triggers a purchase, and that purchase repeats for as long as you keep the motorcycle. The P08 is built to last the life of the bike, so what repeats is only the access work you would have done in any case. On the SP the differences are in the chassis and the finish; the airbox and the element are shared with the standard MT-09, which means both versions run the same part, the same routine and the same shelf in the workshop.
What changes, and what does not
A drop-in element does not make a standard MT-09 noticeably quicker, and any description promising otherwise is describing something else. What it changes is the shape of the restriction over time. A paper cartridge starts clean and closes up as it loads, and because that happens over months it never announces itself. The P08 keeps a low intake restriction that returns to the same starting point after every clean, so the engine is fed the same way at 30,000 kilometres as it was at 3,000. Being dry, it also has no dosing step: there is nothing to apply, nothing to apply too much of, and nothing to be drawn downstream.
Care and cleaning
No oil is involved at any stage, which keeps the job short. Compressed air through the SM272S from the clean side outwards covers the routine. Lukewarm water with a mild detergent covers the rest, rinsed until the water runs clear. Then open air, until the element is dry through — never heat, never a flame — and back into the airbox dry. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
