The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
Moto Guzzi hung the V85's cylinders out into the airstream because that is the cooling system, and gave the bike wire wheels and a nineteen-inch front because that is the intended use. Both details point at the same page of the manual. Gravel and unsealed roads raise a fine, persistent dust that loads an air filter far faster than sealed tarmac ever will, and the sensible answer is not a finer cloth for its own sake but a panel that can be brought back to its starting condition on the spot.
Key Features
- Dry polyester: no tacky film, so nothing in the airbox can be carried downstream when it gets hot
- About double the filtering area of comparable performance elements, in the standard panel size
- Threads from ø 22 microns, woven to a controlled aperture rather than matted from pulp
- Straight swap for the original element, without modification or remapping
- Blown through at the end of a dusty day and refitted at once — no drying time in the routine
- Two years of warranty from purchase
Why oil is the wrong idea on unsealed roads
An oiled gauze works because dust sticks to the oil, and the difficulty is everything that follows. The film softens when an airbox runs warm, and what it takes with it lands on the sensing elements downstream, where the failure is never clean: readings drift low, fuelling follows them, and nothing looks broken. Re-oiling has to be judged by hand as well, and too much does as much harm as too little. A dry weave removes the mechanism instead of reducing the odds of it. None of this is about power — a panel in the series box does not make a V85 quicker; it keeps a dusty week from becoming expensive.
Where this bike sits in the range
Of the twenty-seven machines built around this airbox, exactly two are also listed for the T12 extreme-conditions material: the V85 TT and the V85 Travel. That is a statement about where these bikes are expected to go. It is also a trade worth understanding before reaching for it, because the T12 holds particles down to 7 microns but passes around 560 litres per square metre per second against the 5,050 of this cloth. For roads, and for the gravel most V85s actually see, the standard specification is the one that costs nothing to run.
Care and cleaning
An air line and a couple of minutes: work from the clean face outwards so the dust leaves the way it entered, which at the end of a dusty stage means the element goes straight back in. When it has earned more than that, use warm water and a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs off clear, then dry in air alone — no heat gun, no flame, and nothing refitted damp. Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Moto Guzzi V85 TT, 2018 to 2020. Twenty-seven Moto Guzzi and Aprilia models take the same element; the Fitment tab lists each of them.
