The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
The element gets all the attention, but the box it sits in collects too. Fine dust settles in the base, leaves and grit find their way past the inlet grille, and moisture leaves a film that holds everything in place. Fitting a freshly cleaned PM155S into a box with a season of debris in the bottom of it undoes part of the work, because the panel then sits above a reservoir of exactly what it is meant to be keeping out.
Key Features
- Comes out in one piece, leaving the box open for a proper wipe-out
- Dry polyester at 80 microns, with no oil that could pick up loose dirt in the box
- Roughly twice the filtering area of other performance panels of this size
- Refits under the standard lid with no modification and no remap
- Cleaned with air and reused; there is no annual purchase
- Two years of warranty, counted from the day of purchase
Ten minutes with a cloth
With the panel out, wipe the base of the box with a damp cloth rather than blowing it out — compressed air inside an open airbox moves dust towards the throttle bodies, which is the one direction it must not go. Check the drain if the box has one, clear the inlet grille of leaves, and make sure nothing is sitting on the sealing face where the element will land. Then fit the clean panel and close the lid.
Why it matters more on a travel bike
A 1290 Super Adventure in touring use collects a wider variety of debris than a machine that stays on tarmac near home: pollen in one country, red dust in another, salt spray on a coast road. Most of it never reaches the engine, which means most of it stays in the box. Left there it becomes a reservoir the element has to work against every time the bike is ridden. Emptying it is the least skilled task in the whole service and one of the few with an obvious result. It contributes nothing to the output — nothing in this job does — but it makes the filter's rating mean what it says.
Care and cleaning
For the element: compressed air held on the clean face and moved steadily outwards. If that no longer restores it, wash it in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse it out completely and dry it in air alone — no heat source, no flame, and no refitting while damp. The illustrated Sprint Filter sheet in the Downloads tab covers the sequence step by step, and there is no oiling stage in it.
Fitment & Compatibility
Listed for the KTM 1290 Super Adventure R, S and T of 2014 to 2017. Twelve further machines from KTM and Husqvarna share this element; the Fitment tab shows each with its production years.
