The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
Run down the twenty-four machines that share this airbox and one thing stands out: the SuperSport is the only one with a full fairing. Scramblers, Monsters, Hypermotards, the SportClassics — all of them leave the engine and its intake in open air. Enclosed bodywork changes the conditions the airbox lives in. Less air moves around it, more heat is held under it, and in slow traffic on a hot day the temperature inside that space is nothing like the workshop where filter specifications are written.
Key Features
- Polyester, dry, with no impregnation — heat has nothing to mobilise
- Filtering surface roughly twice that of other performance filters
- Threads from ø 22 microns woven to a fixed aperture, not a mat of pressed fibre
- Replaces the standard element inside the series airbox; the intake stays sealed and standard
- Reusable — an air line at each service, water when it has earned it
- Covered for two years from purchase
Heat is the variable nobody quotes
An oiled cotton filter is at its most vulnerable exactly where a faired bike is at its hottest, and the sensor that meters incoming air sits immediately downstream. A dry cloth does not take part in that: there is nothing to soften, nothing to be carried along, and no re-oiling operation in which too generous a hand can do damage months later. The 937 cc twin underneath the bodywork can run as warm as it likes.
One element for both versions
The base SuperSport and the S — Öhlins suspension, quickshifter, different price — share an intake, so a single part number covers them both. Ducati separated the two versions by suspension and electronics and never by airbox, which leaves the parts question with one answer for either bike. Expect the same of the filter as of the rest of the servicing: no extra performance on a standard engine, simply an intake that keeps its original resistance instead of losing it slowly to a filling paper panel.
Care and cleaning
Blow the CM61S out with compressed air applied to its clean side, pushing the dust back out the face it entered. A deeper clean means hand-warm water and a little neutral detergent, followed by enough rinsing that the run-off is clear, and then unhurried drying in open air. Heat sources of every kind are excluded, flames above all. It returns to the airbox dry and unoiled. The maintenance sheet is attached in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Catalogued for the Ducati SuperSport 939 and SuperSport 939 S from 2017 to 2020. Twenty-four Ducati models take this element; the Fitment tab lists them.
