The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
The XR is the F-series machine built to hold a speed rather than reach one. Hours of steady autobahn work is the least eventful thing a motorcycle does and one of the hardest duties an air filter is ever given, because nothing about it lets up: no traffic, no coasting, no idle minute in which the intake recovers. The engine draws a large, constant volume for as long as the stage lasts, and every cubic metre of it crosses the element. The Sprint Filter P08 PM188S is a dry polyester element with roughly twice the filtering surface, so continuous flow is not the condition in which the intake runs short of area.
Key Features
- Filtering surface roughly double that of other performance elements, sized for hours of uninterrupted flow
- Dry polyester weave: 80 micron filtration, 5,050 litres per square metre per second
- Threads from 22 microns upwards, filtering by weave geometry rather than by an oil film
- Nothing in the intake that a warm airbox can mobilise on a long stage
- Series airbox, series mounting — no modification and no remap
- Washable, reusable, two years of warranty from purchase
Steady load is the demanding case
A dyno run lasts a few seconds and a touring day lasts eight hours, and the two ask very different questions of the same part. Under sustained load the pressure drop across the medium is not a momentary cost but a continuous one, paid for the entire time the bike is at speed, and the airbox runs warm throughout. Both facts point the same way: more area, so the restriction is low to begin with, and a dry medium, so heat has nothing to carry downstream towards the sensors.
The claim this part does not make
It will not add meaningful power to a standard F 900 XR. Any element that drops into the series housing works inside an intake BMW has already sized, and a description promising horsepower from that is selling something else. What is real is more modest and more useful on a bike that covers distance: the restriction begins lower and stays there far longer than paper manages, and the maintenance item most often postponed on a high-mileage tourer becomes one that is cleaned at home instead of ordered.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air from the clean side, worked outwards, is the standard service and takes minutes. For a deeper clean use lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear, then dry the PM188S completely in moving air — never with heat, never near a flame — and refit it dry. There is no oil at any stage of the routine. Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW F 900 XR from 2019 to 2026. The PM188S element serves the F platform alongside Kove and Voge machines with the same airbox; the Fitment tab has the complete list.
