DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00281-25 is a shock absorber spring rated at 80 N/mm, 270 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • 125 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 00281-25
  • Free length 270 mm
  • Measured spring rate 80 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow

Why the Rate Holds

Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 270 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Choosing 80 N/mm

Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

How a Rear Spring Works

Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.

Applications

Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.

Installation

Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
