DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06452-09 is a shock absorber spring rated at 80 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 61 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 118 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 220 mm
  • Inner diameter 61 mm
  • Öhlins part number 06452-09
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 80 N/mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one.

Size and Rate

Dimensionally this is a 61 mm × 220 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 80 N/mm.

Choosing 80 N/mm

Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged.

Applications

A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs.

What Fitting Involves

Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
