DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01091-24 is a shock absorber spring rated at 80 N/mm, 160 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 80 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Öhlins part number 01091-24
  • Free length 160 mm
  • 82 mm of usable stroke

Manufacture and Tolerance

Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service.

The Numbers That Matter

The 57 mm bore and 160 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 80 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Where This Rate Belongs

Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

How a Rear Spring Works

Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.

Applications

A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same.

What Fitting Involves

Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
