DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21040-21 is a shock absorber spring rated at 75 N/mm, 160 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • 82 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 21040-21
  • Free length 160 mm
  • Measured spring rate 75 N/mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Inner diameter 51 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

Manufacture and Tolerance

The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service.

The Numbers That Matter

At 160 mm free length and 51 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Where This Rate Belongs

If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks.

Applications

This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate.

Fitting

Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
