DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00698-18 is a shock absorber spring rated at 68 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Free length 230 mm
  • Öhlins part number 00698-18
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 68 N/mm
  • 120 mm of usable stroke

How Öhlins Makes Them

Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service.

The Numbers That Matter

At 230 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

What This Rate Does

Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.

Applications

Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?

What Fitting Involves

Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
