DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06774-15 is a shock absorber spring rated at 60 N/mm, 270 mm long with a 70 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 70 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 270 mm
  • Öhlins part number 06774-15
  • Measured spring rate 60 N/mm
  • 153 mm of usable stroke

How Öhlins Makes Them

Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain.

Dimensions

The 70 mm bore and 270 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 60 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

Where This Rate Belongs

Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.

Applications

Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight.

Installation

Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
