DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60294-62 is a shock absorber spring rated at 60 N/mm, 260 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Measured spring rate 60 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Free length 260 mm
  • Öhlins part number 60294-62

Why the Rate Holds

Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not.

Size and Rate

Dimensionally this is a 46 mm × 260 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 60 N/mm.

Choosing 60 N/mm

Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect.

Applications

This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight.

Installation

Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
