DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06774-13 is a shock absorber spring rated at 55 N/mm, 270 mm long with a 70 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Free length 270 mm
  • Inner diameter 70 mm
  • 154 mm of usable stroke
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Öhlins part number 06774-13
  • Measured spring rate 55 N/mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not.

Size and Rate

Free length 270 mm, inner diameter 70 mm, rate 55 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

What This Rate Does

This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. A middle rate balances support against compliance, which is why Öhlins uses it as the baseline. If you are unsure and close to average weight in full kit, this is the sensible starting point. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks.

Applications

This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?

What Fitting Involves

The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. Set static sag after fitting; the rate is only right if the sag figure lands where Öhlins specifies. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
