DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60294-61 is a shock absorber spring rated at 52 N/mm, 260 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 60294-61
  • Measured spring rate 52 N/mm
  • Free length 260 mm
  • Inner diameter 46 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel.

Size and Rate

Öhlins holds the free length at 260 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

What This Rate Does

This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. Rates here suit a solo rider of typical weight on a road-going machine. A mid rate balances support under braking against compliance over the surface, which is why it is the usual starting point. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.

Applications

There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.

Installation

The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
