DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 00698-09 is a shock absorber spring rated at 50 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.
Key Features
- Measured spring rate 50 N/mm
- Öhlins part number 00698-09
- Free length 230 mm
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- 126 mm of usable stroke
- Powder-coated yellow
- Inner diameter 57 mm
How Öhlins Makes Them
The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain.
The Numbers That Matter
At 230 mm free length and 57 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.
What This Rate Does
If you are unsure and close to average weight in full kit, this is the sensible starting point. Rates here suit a solo rider of typical weight on a road-going machine. A middle rate balances support against compliance, which is why Öhlins uses it as the baseline. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
Rate and the Linkage
Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.
Applications
Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?
What Fitting Involves
Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification.
Road Approval
Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
