DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06310-05 is a shock absorber spring rated at 42 N/mm, 235 mm long with a 61 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 140 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Öhlins part number 06310-05
  • Inner diameter 61 mm
  • Free length 235 mm
  • Measured spring rate 42 N/mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later. Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships.

Dimensions

Dimensionally this is a 61 mm × 235 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 42 N/mm.

Choosing 42 N/mm

This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. Mid rates suit a solo rider on a road-going machine with occasional spirited use. Rates here suit a solo rider of typical weight on a road-going machine. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

How a Rear Spring Works

The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.

Applications

Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits.

Fitting

Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
