DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06772-05 is a shock absorber spring rated at 35 N/mm, 350 mm long with a 70 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 70 mm
  • Free length 350 mm
  • Öhlins part number 06772-05
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 208 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 35 N/mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later.

Dimensions

Free length 350 mm, inner diameter 70 mm, rate 35 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Choosing 35 N/mm

A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

How a Rear Spring Works

Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.

Applications

This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits.

What Fitting Involves

Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Work on both legs in one session so the fork stays symmetrical.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
