DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06774-05 is a shock absorber spring rated at 35 N/mm, 310 mm long with a 70 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 70 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 310 mm
  • Öhlins part number 06774-05
  • 185 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 35 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate

How Öhlins Makes Them

The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one.

Size and Rate

Free length 310 mm, inner diameter 70 mm, rate 35 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Where This Rate Belongs

This is the end of the range where small-bump compliance matters more than resistance to diving. The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks.

Applications

A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take.

Fitting

The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
